It Looks As Though New Mutants Will Get A Theatrical Release Under Disney After All

After a lot of questions as to what was going on with ‘New Mutants’, it looks as though the Josh Boone-directed expansion of the ‘X-Men’ franchise, filmed under the 20th Century Fox tenure, will actually be released in theaters later this year.  At industry gathering CinemaCon, ‘New Mutants’ was among the logos seen during a presentation of the movies coming out under Disney’s banner, following the finalization of its acquisition of Fox.

Both ‘New Mutants’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’ have been delayed numerous times, and there was talk that these movies wouldn’t be released by Disney, who will reboot the ‘X-Men’ brand as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The first few minutes of ‘Dark Phoenix’ were shown at WonderCon, a fan convention, last week, and the audience’s reaction was overwhelmingly positive.  That movie will be out– in theaters– on June 7.  There was talk that ‘New Mutants’ might get released directly to Hulu, which Disney now owns 60% of, following the Fox acquisition, but it seems that Disney will go forward with the planned theatrical release.  ‘New Mutants” release date appears to still be August 2.

But as previously reported, reshoots for the movie have not yet taken place.  That sort of implies that the movie really isn’t finished, and there are just a few months before it is due to be released.  Reportedly, the reshoots would be to allow Boone to take the film into more of a horror direction, which was his original vision.

Those reshoots probably need to happen soon, as the cast is moving on to other projects.  Maisie Williams (Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane) has the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ to promote.  Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin/Magik) is currently filming a remake of ‘Emma’ and has Netflix’s ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ to promote.  Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie/Cannonball)’s Netflix series, ‘Stranger Things’ has its third season dropping in early July.  Henry Zaga is also filming a Netflix series, ‘Trinkets’, also starring another member of the Fox X-Men crew, Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead, from the ‘Deadpool’ movies).  And Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar/Mirage) is starring in… yep, another Netflix series, the sci-fi thriller ‘Another Life’.

But it sounds like, one way or another, ‘New Mutants’ will finally hit theaters on August 2, 2019.
