Maisie Williams New Mutants

The Disney buyout of 21st Century Fox was just finalized last week, but it’s been pretty obvious for a while now that the last two Fox ‘X-Men’ movies were in trouble.  After a lot of gossip to the contrary, it looks as though ‘Dark Phoenix’, the final film featuring the X-Men proper will be released to theaters as planned, on June 7.  But what about ‘New Mutants’?  Who the f— knows?  Star Maisie Williams certainly doesn’t.

When asked by Rolling Stone magazine, she didn’t hold back and replied:

“Who knows when the f— that’s gonna come out.  Hopefully this interview will make everyone hurry up a little bit.”

She added that she recently spoke to her costar, Charlie Heaton, and asked him “What the f— is going on with this movie?”

Directed by John Boone, ‘New Mutants’ was looked at as the kickoff to a potential new franchise within the larger X-Men universe.  Boone openly described the picture as a horror movie, specifically a “rubber room” thriller, and he discussed the idea that future sequels would explore other types of horror subcategories.  Sequels?  Fans will be lucky to get just this one picture.

Williams starred as Rahne Sinclair, a mutant known in the comics as Wolfsbane.  Heaton costars as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a Cannonball.  The cast also includes Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, plus Antonio Banderas and Alice Braga.

While ‘New Mutants’ hasn’t been pulled from its August 2 release date, reshoots have not taken place, meaning that the film is really probably not yet complete.  Williams stated that reshoots were intended to “make it scarier.”

Recent rumors indicated that ‘New Mutants’ would skip a theatrical release and go straight to Hulu, the streaming service of which Disney now owns 60%.  But was just a rumor, so it may or may not turn out to be true.  Unfortunately, at this point, rumors are all anyone has to go by when it comes to ‘New Mutants’.  Nothing concrete has been announced in months!
