The gang may not be all here, but some of them are, and they’re among the new recruits.  Production on ‘The Suicide Squad’ is growing nearer, as director and screenwriter James Gunn posted a photo of himself flanked by some of the cast of his upcoming DC supervillain flick.  It’s very possible that this picture– as candid and fun as it may look– could offer a clue to the movie.  (Or not.)  From left to right, pictured are: Flula Borg, whose role in the new film is undisclosed; Daniela Melchior, who is playing a gender-swapped version of Batman’s sewer-dwelling foe Ratcatcher; David Dastmalchian, who portrays the Polka Dot Man; Gunn himself; and Jennifer Holland, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, and Mayling Ng, whose roles are also unknown.

It doesn’t seem that this is a table read or anything like that yet.  (For one thing, Ng would be WAY overdressed.)  But it is very possible that Gunn met with his new actors in order to discuss his approach to the project and how their characters will factor in or work together.

What’s interesting is that these are all new actors.  It’s been repeatedly stressed that Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ is not a sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 ‘Suicide Squad’, even though a big chunk of the cast is returning.  But it’s possible that some of the originals won’t be making it into another sequel, or even to the end of this one.

Producer, Peter Safran attempted to offer some insight, telling ComicBook.com:

“It’s called ‘The Suicide Squad’.  It’s not ‘Suicide Squad 2’. It is not a sequel. I will leave that alone but, yes, it’s called ‘The Suicide Squad’.”

Returning from Ayer’s film are Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang).  It’s a safe bet that Harley Quinn survives, and I’d say you can’t go forward with additional ‘Suicide Squad’ movies without Amanda Waller (but I could be wrong).  But Flag and Boomer’ may be toast.

Warner Brothers

Steve Agee will provide the voice of King Shark.  The cast also includes, in mystery roles, Juan Diego Botto, Alice Braga, Peter Capaldi, John Cena, Joaquín Cosío, Pete Davidson, Idris Elba, Tinashe Kajese, Storm Reid, Michael Rooker, Julio Ruiz, and Taika Waititi.  Bear in mind, not everyone is playing a supervillain or hero.  There will probably be loads of non-Metahuman supporting cast.

Although their parts are under wraps, we do know that Reid plays Elba’s daughter, and it is believed that Capaldi plays the film’s Big Bad.  It is also known that the DC character The Peacemaker is part of the story, so one of these actors is likely playing him.

What do you think so far?  Check back for updates as they arrive!

‘The Suicide Squad’ is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
