Rising star Storm Reid has been cast as Idris Elba‘s daughter in the upcoming Warner Bros./DC Comics movie ‘The Suicide Squad’.  The identity of Elba’s character has not been revealed.  Originally, Elba was hired to replace Will Smith as Deadshot/Floyd Lawton, a character that also had a daughter, Zoe, played by Shailyn Pierre-Dixon.  But in April, it was revealed that rather than take over as Deadshot, Elba would play a different character.  At this time, it is believed that this will be Bronze Tiger, but that isn’t confirmed.

Reid first gained notice for headlining Disney’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, and she went on to appear in Netflix’s acclaimed miniseries ‘When They See Us’, and HBO’s controversial ‘Euphoria’.  She will next be seen in the comedy ‘Killing Winston Jones’ and has been cast in Universal/Blumhouse’s ‘The Invisible Man’.

‘The Suicide Squad’ is currently expected to begin filming in September in Atlanta.  James Gunn is directing, and the cast includes Jai Courtney (as Captain Boomerang), David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn).  John Cena may or not co-star.  The part he would play is also unknown, but it is likely The Peacemaker, a character that Gunn reportedly included in the script for his ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ star Dave Bautista to play before scheduling conflicts squashed those plans.

Not much has been revealed about this film’s plot, but Gunn wrote the script and has expressed that his favorite version of ‘The Suicide Squad’ comic book was that written by John Ostrander in the 1980s.  Reportedly, his screenplay also calls for the monstrous creature King Shark.  It was previously reported that ‘The Suicide Squad’ was a hard reboot and not a sequel to the 2016 movie, but the fact that so much of the original cast is returning makes that seems questionable.  (Then again, it is ‘The Suicide Squad’… maybe they die on a mission and get replaced.)

‘The Suicide Squad’ opens in theaters on August 6, 2021.
