Hulu Announces Runaways Cancellation Via A New Trailer
Hulu

I literally JUST wrote that the upcoming third season of ‘Runaways’ would likely be its last.  (You can read that here.)  Now it’s official, as Hulu has released a new trailer which bears the bad news: “Final Season December 13.”  This follows the axing of Freeform’s ‘Cloak & Dagger’ on October 24.

You can watch the new trailer, which features guest appearances by Cloak & Dagger, and new villain Morgan Le Fay (Elizabeth Hurley), below:

It has been said that Season 3 comes to a natural ending for the series, so don’t worry about the show ending on an unresolved cliffhanger.

Via Deadline:

In Season 3, the Runaways frantically search for their captured friends Chase, Gert, and Karolina. The kids go head-to-head with an unstoppable enemy who has targeted Leslie — or more accurately, the child she’s carrying. Nico draws them all into a dark realm where its ruler, Morgan le Fay, played by Elizabeth Hurley, is much more nefarious than anyone the kids have yet to face.

The cancellations of ‘Runaways’ and ‘Cloak & Dagger’ follows the promotion of Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige to Chief Creative Officer of Marvel, meaning that the man who oversees the Marvel film franchise is now in charge of the TV division as well.  Marvel Studios (the film division) is branching out into television with a series of shows on Disney+.

The existing Marvel shows were developed by Marvel Entertainment, a separate entity, under the guidance of Jeph Loeb.  With Feige’s ascension, Loeb is expected to depart Disney by the end of the year.

The new Disney+ shows carry budgets on par with the films and actually connect to them.  The lower-budget existing shows, which only tenuously connect to the films, don’t fit the same level of quality, and it was pretty much a foregone conclusion with Feige in charge, they would all be canceled.  ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ending had been announced previously, although there is still one season yet to air.

Hulu has another Marvel show in development– ‘Helstrom’.  No telling what’s going on there.  It was devised under Loeb’s tenure.  A ‘Ghost Rider’ show was announced at the same time, but that has already been scrapped.  For some reason, ‘Helstrom’ is progressing.  If it does actually get made, don’t get attached.

There is a fan effort underway to get Disney to renew ‘Cloak & Dagger’ under Disney+.  It’s not going to do that, and it’s not going to move ‘Runaways’ over either.  These are remnants of the old regime.  With these two out of the way, that gives Marvel Studios a completely clean slate upon which to build its version of a Marvel television.

But if you are a fan of ‘Runaways’, at least you get one more season.  The new episodes will be available on December 13.
