Teen Choice Awards

It’s official: Teens love Marvel Superheroes.  At the 2019 Teen Choice Awards– broadcast on Sunday, August 11– ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ swept the film categories, besting most competitors in the areas of “Action” and “Summer” movies.  Interestingly, the DC movies, ‘Shazam!’ and ‘Aquaman’, were nominated under the “Sci-Fi/Fantasy” listings, where they were beaten mostly by ‘Aladdin’.

On the TV side of things, the now-defunct ‘Shadowhunters’ took home two more prizes, and awards were given to ‘Supernatural’, and ‘Arrow’.  But it was teen phenomenon ‘Riverdale’ that earned the most awards for TV.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ was named Choice Action Movie, beating ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’, ‘Bumblebee’, ‘Captain Marvel’, ‘Men in Black: International’, and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’.

Robert Downey Jr. won Choice Action Movie Actor, for what is likely his final appearance as Tony Stark/Iron Man.  He topped his co-stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Paul Rudd, as well as Samuel L. Jackson, who was nominated for ‘Captain Marvel’.  The only non-Marvel actor in this category was John Cena for ‘Bumblebee’.

Scarlett Johansson won Choice Action Movie Actress for playing Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, but unlike Downey, she will return in her own solo movie next year.  She beat fellow Marvel stars Brie Larson, Evangeline Lilly, and Zoe Saldana, as well as Tessa Thompson, who was nominated for ‘MiB:I’, and Hailee Steinfeld for ‘Bumblebee’.

Choice Movie Villain went to Josh Brolin’s Thanos, besting Johnny Depp for ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’, Jude law for ‘Captain Marvel’, Mark Strong for ‘Shazam!’, Marwan Kenzari for ‘Aladdin’, and Patrick Wilson for ‘Aquaman’.

‘Aladdin’ swept the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie categories, winning Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie, Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie Actor for Will Smith, and Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie Actress for Naomi Scott.

‘Aladdin’ beat out ‘Aquaman’, ‘Dark Phoenix’, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’, and ‘Shazam!’.  (REALLY?!  ‘Dark Phoenix’ was nominated?!)

Smith bested James McAvoy for ‘Dark Phoenix’, Jason Momoa for ‘Aquaman’, Lin-Manuel Miranda for ‘Mary Poppins Returns’, Mena Massoud for ‘Aladdin’, and Zachary Levi for ‘Shazam!’.

Scott topped Amber Heard for ‘Aquaman’, Emily Blunt for ‘Mary Poppins Returns’, Katherine Waterston for ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’, Keira Knightley for ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’, and Sophie Turner for ‘Dark Phoenix’.

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ won Choice Summer Movie, Choice Summer Movie Actor for Tom Holland, and Choice Summer Movie Actress for Zendaya.

As for Television, Choice Drama TV Show, Choice Drama TV Actor, and Choice Drama TV Actress went to ‘Riverdale’, and its stars Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart, respectively.

‘Shadowhunters’ won Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show, with its star Katherin McNamara winning Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress.  The show itself bested ‘Charmed’, ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, ‘Legacies’, ‘Supernatural’, and ‘The 100′.  McNamara came out ahead of Danielle Rose Russell/’Legacies’, Ellen Page/’The Umbrella Academy’.
Kiernan Shipka/’Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, Melonie Diaz/’Charmed’, and Olivia Holt/’Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger’.

Jared Padalecki won for Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor, over Aubrey Joseph/’Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger’, Bob Morley/’The 100′, Dominic Sherwood/’Shadowhunters’, Harry Shum Jr./’Shadowhunters’, and Ross Lynch/’Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’.

Flip-flopping the Movie categories, the DC superhero shows were listed as “Action” instead of “Sci-Fi/Fantasy” but only Stephen Amell from ‘Arrow’ won for Choice Action TV Actor, while Cameron Monaghan won for Choice TV Villain for ‘Gotham’.

The awards telecast was hosted by Lucy Hale and Youtuber David Dobrik, and featured performances by Blanco Brown, OneRepublic, Bazzi, Mabel, Jordan McGraw with Sarah Hyland, CNCO, HRVY, Monsta X, and Zhavia.  Unfortunately, it is being reported that the telecast was this award’s lowest-rated yet, dipping even lower than last year’s, which was the lowest-rated until now.
