Avengers: Endgame

‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the biggest movie ever, in more ways than one.  The Marvel magnum opus just became the highest-grossing film of all time, and it capped 11 years-worth of storytelling and 21 movies.  It came at quite a cost.  Its production budget was $356 million!  But it has made $2.793 billion, which is just shy of $3 billion.

Now comes word that not only was this one of the most expensive movies ever made, but it contains the most expensive single shot in any movie.  Considering the scope of that climactic battle sequence, that’s easy to believe.  Oh, but wait.  That wasn’t it.  The directors, Joe and Anthony Russo divulged that the most expensive shot in the movie, and the single most expensive shot in any movie ever was… Stark’s funeral.

Joe Russo stated:

“We used to joke, and I don’t know if it’s joking, it’s probably the most expensive shot in movie history.  That’s a lot of salary on the screen there. At the very least it’s the most expensive day of extras in movie history, outside of Cleopatra.”

One thing that’s kind of been proven time and again, is that the actors in the MCU really can’t be trusted with keeping secrets.  (Looking at you, Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo.)  To that end, the Russos had to lie to the cast and tell them that they were filming a wedding scene before they arrived on set.

Joe said:

“They were all brought there under this pretense that they were coming for a wedding — it’s kind of heartbreaking to think about now — but they all have managers, and agents, and hair and make up, and we can’t tell anybody what we’re up to, because it can leak through one of a thousand sources.

“So they were all brought there under the pretense that they’re coming for a wedding, and the day they got there and we started to dress them in the black outfits, they said, ‘This is a very strange wedding.’ We said, ‘It’s because it’s actually a funeral.’”

Anthony Russo divulged that Gwyneth Paltrow had been warned beforehand that “it was an enormous character moment.”  But considering she can’t keep what movies she has and has not appeared in straight, that was probably a safe bet.

Anthony further added:

“Maybe one or two of the other actors we knew it was a big moment for. But no, most of them found out on that day, so it’s a testament to what good actors they are.”

In case you were curious, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is only the third most expensive movie ever made.  ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ is the most expensive film ever made, costing $379M.  And somehow, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ is the second-most expensive movie ever made, with a budget of $365M.  If you adjust the price for inflation, ‘Endgame’ is the fourth-most expensive movie, with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ slipping ahead.  Don’t ask me where all that money went.  Does Johnny Depp really make that much per picture?

Anyway, the third-most-expensive movie of all time, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ will be released on digital on July 30 and Blu-Ray, 4K HD and DVD on August 13, for you to feast your eyes on again and again.
