Emeli Sandé Extraordinary Being

Award-winning British chanteuse Emeli Sandé has released a new music video for her single ‘Extraordinary Being’ from the soundtrack of ‘Dark Phoenix’.  Last year saw the releases of numerous hit singles/videos from superhero flicks, including ‘Sunflower’ by Post Malone featuring Swae Lee from ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, and ‘All of the Stars’ by Kendrick Lamar featuring SZA from ‘Black Panther’, not to mention the atrocity that was ‘Ocean to Ocean’ by Pitbull from the ‘Aquaman’ soundtrack.  But this marks the first single from one of the ‘X-Men’ movies.

Sandé may not be well-known in the US, but she has had quite a successful career in her native Great Britain.  Stateside, her biggest hits were 2013’s ‘Herself’, and ‘Next To Me’, and she has been nominated for the Teen Choice and Soul Train Awards.

Lyrically, ‘Extraordinary Being’ fits the idea of being a persecuted minority embodied in the ‘X-Men’ films, wrapping it in a shiny empowerment anthem.  (Perfect for Pride Month!)  Musically, it’s a swirling throwback to late ’80s-early ’90s R&B/house music– think Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield.  The music video is vibrant, and includes loads of new footage from ‘Dark Phoenix’, although the violent film clips clash with the serene imagery of Sandé singing.

HOWEVER, most X-citingly, the new video offers the first glimpse of a character that was only rumored to be in the film.  Are you ready for this?  (No seriously, if you’re a gay man, you REALLY need to be sitting down.)

It’s Dazzler!  There had been a rumor, last August, that ‘The Orville’s Halston Sage was going to appear as the character, but that was a very faint rumor and there hasn’t been any further buzz in that regard.

A scene was cut from ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ in which Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) check out a Dazzler vinyl record at the mall, so it really didn’t seem like the singing and skating mutant would ever appear in a film.  It is, however, fitting that she makes her screen debut in this picture, as the comic book character, also known as Allison Blaire, made her debut during the original ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’.

The footage of Dazzler in ‘Extraordinary Being’ is VERY brief, so if I had to put money on it, I’d say that at some point her music video appears on a TV screen and that’s it.  But even so, it’s something!

You can watch all of Emeli Sandé’s ‘Extraordinary Being’ music video below.  Dazzler shows up around the 2:00 mark:

‘Dark Phoenix’ (featuring DAZZLER!) will engulf theaters on June 7th, 2019.
