dazzler

After some teasing during the production of last year’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, it appears that the mutant superhero/pop star Dazzler, also known as Allison Blaire, would finally make her live action debut on the big screen.

For the “mall sequence” from ‘Apocalypse, in which Cyclops/Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Jubilee (Lana Condor) and Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner (Kodi Smit-McPhee) ditch class to catch a screening of ‘Return of the Jedi’ at the local mall, a scene was shot in a record store where Scott holds up the latest Vinyl LP by pop star Dazzler to show Jean, but that and a couple of other moments from this sequence were cut due to time constraints.

That would have only been a fun Easter Egg for comic readers, though.  It looks as though fans will get something even better in the next movie, ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’– by most accounts, Dazzler will actually be in the movie.  Earlier there had been buzz that Suki Waterhouse, who appeared in ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ and ‘Insurgent’ as well as the STARZ miniseries ‘The White Princess’ was under consideration, but it is now believed that the part has gone to Halston Sage.

Sage is starring in Seth McFarlane’s upcoming ‘Star Trek’-spoof ‘The Orville’.  She also previously appeared in the ‘Goosebumps’ movie with Jack Black.  If this casting is true, this will reunite Sage with Tye Sheridan, with whom she starred in ‘Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse’.

First of all, a photo of her appeared on a board featuring headshots of the ‘Dark Phoenix’ cast including new addition Jessica Chastain, in a behind-the-scenes pic posted by one of the film’s stuntmen.  (See below.)

Secondly, Sage recently attended a Hans Zimmer concert with the ‘Dark Phoenix’ cast, including Sheridan and Turner, as seen in this Instagram post:

Of course, a similar fuss was made last year when the ‘Apocalypse’ cast attended a Taylor Swift concert and the photo was posted to social media.  Speculation swirled that the ‘Shake It Off’ singer was stepping into Dazzler’s silver roller skates, which proved untrue.

But here is the pic originally posted by stuntman Mich Todorovic:

Obviously, Sage’s pic is the one that’s circled.

For the uninitiated, Dazzler was a reluctant mutant, who was more interested in being a singer and actress but who found herself inadvertently drawn into heroics.  Her powers allowed her to convert sound into various forms of light, from blinding flashes to laser beams.  She debuted in 1980s ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #130, during the famous ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’ which is the story upon which this latest film is based, so if they want to bring the character into the film universe, this is the storyline for it.

Simon Kinberg wrote and is directing ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ which is currently filming.  If Sage is actually playing Dazzler, she joins Turner, Sheridan, McPhee, Chastain (as Lilandra), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Evan Peters (Quicksilver), and Alexandra Shipp (Storm).  Olivia Munn is rumored to also be returning as Psylocke.

While ‘X-Men: First Class’ was set in the ’60s and ‘Apocalypse’ was set during the ’80s, ‘Dark Phoenix’ is said to leap forward into the ’90s.

Are you excited that Dazzler might be in ‘Dark Phoenix’?  Would Halston Sage make a good choice?
