The second season of ‘Arrow‘ is really doing a good job at filling in the DC universe and the latest addition might just ending up forming the Birds of Prey. We already know that the show is going to introduce us to The Flash, Dr. Anthony Ivo (whcih may lead us to the introduction of the android Amazo down the line), a hint at Metamorpho, and of course Black Canary in the seocnd season. It’s that Black Canary reference that originally could get one thinking of the Birds of Prey as it’s members tend to include Black Canary, The Huntress (who we’ve seen in season 1), and Oracle/Batgirl.

While two of the three characters might be a stretch on its own, we have another detail that really pushes the idea forward that will really make this team up seem believable. The show’s executive producer, Marc Guggenheim, recently went on record to say:

“We have an idea for how to do our version of Birds of Prey. When you think about it, we have a lot of pieces. It’s a lot like the Suicide Squad. As we continue to populate our world with new characters and some returning people from last year, you start to go, “We’re really close to that!” We saw this awesome bit of production art for a new set that we realized plays into Birds of Prey completely. Our Art Department wasn’t even intending that! There’s certainly a momentum towards that, but everything has to happen in due time. With respect to Birds of Prey specifically, there’s an actress that we particularly need to make that piece work and we need to check on her availability.”

I’m not sure this particular actress he was referring was Jessica De Gouw as The Huntress who is currently busy with ‘Dracula‘ or a new one to take up the role of Barbara Gordon aka Oracle. Either way, in the comic world these three are some of the best developed female superheroes that DC has put out to date (we’ll all pretend the last televised version of the ‘Birds of Prey’ never happened). With the success of ‘Arrow’ so far, the producers might be able to bring what DC hasn’t been able to do in movies quite yet – a cohesive universe. Maybe DC should stick to the small screen successes with how well they pulled off a universe with ‘Smallville’. Or maybe they need to start poaching their big screen treatment writers from these shows? Doubtful but you never know.

So there you have it, we’re only one member away from seeing the Birds of Prey a reality. Whether this will happen by the end of the second season or if this a long term goal to be developed into the third season is unknown, but it’s great to see the ‘Arrow’ universe expanding. Are you excited to see this or does this almost sound like too much too fast? Sound off below!
