The producers of The CW’s ‘Arrow’ caused a stir when they announced that the Scarlet Speedster, known as The Flash would be appearing on their hit super hero drama.  Previously, there had been a “no powers” rule on the show, but that will be relaxed this fall, when the second season kicks off.  And while a steady stream of new actors and characters has been announced over the course of months, the biggest new role remained uncast until now.

Grant Gustin, who played the conniving Sebastian Smythe on ‘Glee’, will embody the part of police scientist Barry Allen, who will debut on the eighth and ninth episodes of the new season before returning for the twentieth which will serve as a backdoor pilot for a possible ongoing ‘Flash’ solo tv series.  Gustin also previously played Campbell Price in several episodes of ‘90210’ this past season.

Here is the official description of the character and how he fits into the series:

Barry Allen is described as a Central City assistant police forensic investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. A comic book fan boy, Barry is obsessed with the Arrow unaware that working with Oliver and Felicity to solve the crime has brought him right into the dangerous world of the vigilante.

This tragedy may be a reference to his mother’s murder, a subplot from the current comic book series.  I suppose moving him back to Central City once his ‘Arrow’ arc is finished helps remove the super powered element from the show, restoring it to its “no powers” status.

It’s not clear if Green Arrow will actually play a part in Barry becoming The Flash, but here’s hoping not and that they stay as faithful to the comics as possible.

So what do you think?  Are you familiar with Gustin?  How do you think he’ll do as Barry/The Flash?  (Will be bleach his hair?)  Leave a comment with your reaction below!
