The most recent teaser trailer for CBS All Access’ ‘Star Trek: Picard’ may have evoked some memories of the last ‘Star Trek’ movie prior to the rebooted Kelvin flicks, ‘Nemesis’. But it sounds as though part of ‘Picard’ will actually be used to redeem that underwhelming picture. Speaking to Variety, star Sir Patrick Stewart compared the send-off that he was able to give to another of his iconic roles versus the lackluster fizzle of ‘Nemesis’.
“Hugh [Jackman] and I were so thrilled when the last thing we did for X-Men was Logan. It was the best X-Men experience we both had, because we were the same characters but their world had been blown apart. Next Generation didn’t end like that. In fact, our last movie, Nemesis, was pretty weak.”
Perhaps the most memorable occurrence in ‘Nemesis’ was the destruction of Data, who sacrificed himself to save Picard. It seems increasingly likely that ‘Picard’ will reverse that and bring Data (Brent Spiner) back.
As Spiner expressed in a previous interview, regarding the destruction of Data in ‘Nemesis’ (via ComicBook.com):
“I’ll tell you what. I thought it made a lot of sense and because I was also part of the team that wrote the story, I knew that was going to happen. We had been told in almost no uncertain terms by Paramount Pictures, that this was going to be our last film, so I thought it made a lot of sense to leave the audience with a really big, dramatic, emotional moment at the end of the film. If that’s the last time you were going to see the character then that’s the way it should be, you know … at the time I thought it was the right way to go.”
We don’t have long to wait to see how ‘Picard’ shapes up, as it arrives in just weeks.
Star Trek: Picard features Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The new series will follow this iconic character into the next chapter of his life.
‘Star Trek: Picard’ arrives on CBS All Access on January 23rd, 2020.
