Respected actor Peter Sarsgaard has apparently been cast in ‘The Batman’.  As he has done with all previous castings, director Matt Reeves posted a short video clip on Twitter to announce the casting accompanied by a “bat” emoji.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Sources speculate” (pay special attention to the word “SPECULATE”… and unnamed “sources” for that matter) that Sarsgaard could be playing a “corrupt cop named Wasserman” or a district attorney.

If it’s the first… let’s be honest, who cares?  This movie is already confirmed to have several actual supervillains, so a corrupt cop is bound to be a small throwaway part (who will probably die), and honestly, Sarsgaard is too good an actor to waste on such a role.

But should he be playing a district attorney, he has most likely been cast as Harvey Dent/Two-Face.  That’s not confirmed, but it was reported back in June that Two-Face would be in this movie.  So far, most of the villains that were already announced as being in this movie have been cast, so it’s very likely that this one is in ‘The Batman’ too.

Billy Dee Williams portrayed Harvey Dent in 1989’s ‘Batman’, but he was replaced by Tommy Lee Jones in 1995’s ‘Batman Forever’.  Aaron Eckhart portrayed Harvey Dent/Two-Face in ‘The Dark Knight’.  Nicholas D’Agosto played the character(s) on the small screen on ‘Gotham’.

Sarsgaard joins Robert Pattinson, as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as The Riddler/Edward Nashton, Jeffery Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and newcomer Jayme Lawson as an original creation, Bella, “a grassroots political candidate running for office in Gotham.”  Colin Farrell was reported to be in talks to portray The Penguin.

Like much of the cast, Sarsgaard has mainly worked in more prestigious indie pictures.  He was nominated for a Golden Globe for 2004’s ‘Shattered Glass’, and he has been nominated or won awards for his work in ‘An Education’, ‘Kinsey’, ‘Blue Jasmine’, ‘The Killing’, ‘Garden State’, and ‘Jarhead’.  He appeared last year in the Hulu miniseries ‘The Looming Tower’, and Netflix’s ‘Wormwood’.

He does have the distinction of having appeared in one would-be big-budget popcorn flick, which just so happens to have been a DC Comics movie… and a box office flop.  In case you forgot, he played the villain Hector Hammond in ‘Green Lantern‘.  Yeah, I’m pretty sure he hopes no one remembers that.

If Sarsgaard is playing Two-Face as expected, the two villains that were rumored to appear that have yet to be cast are the pyromaniac Firefly and The Mad Hatter.

Well, what do you think of this latest development?

‘The Batman’ is expected to start filming in early 2020 to arrive in theaters on June 25, 2021.
