The Mad Hatter And Two-Face Are Also Reported To Menace 'The Batman'

It was previously rumored that six rogues would appear in Matt Reeves‘The Batman’, and if the latest buzz is true, that will be the case.  We just learned that Catwoman, Firefly, The Riddler, and The Penguin would appear, with The Riddler supposedly being the film’s main antagonist.  Now comes word that Two-Face and the Mad Hatter will also be in the mix.  Robert Pattinson will portray Bruce Wayne/The Batman.

Reportedly, Reeves and Warner Bros. are looking for an actor in the 30-40s range for Two-Face and someone in their 40-50s for Mad Hatter.  This news comes via Jacob Fisher at Discussing Film, who stresses that one or more characters may not make the final cut, pointing to Batgirl who was slated to appear in ‘Birds of Prey’ before being written out just before casting was to begin.

Although it sounds as though this film will be packed with bad guys, it was stressed early on that some would only be background characters.  “Too many villains” has been a problem that plagued the first ‘Batman’ movie franchise, and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, just to name two.

In the comics, Two-Face was do-gooder district attorney Harvey Dent, a close friend of Bruce Wayne’s, before his face was half-destroyed by acid flung by a vengeful mobster.  Billy Dee Williams portrayed Harvey Dent in 1989’s ‘Batman’ with plans for him to return to become Two-Face in a future movie, but instead, he was replaced by a scenery-chewing Tommy Lee Jones in 1995’s ‘Batman Forever’.

Aaron Eckhart portrayed Harvey Dent/Two-Face in ‘The Dark Knight’, and Nicholas D’Agosto on the television series Gotham.

The Mad Hatter, a.k.a. Jervis Tetch is a scientist whose expertise is mind control.  He is modeled after the character from Lewis Carroll’s book ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’.

David Wayne played the villain in the 1960s ‘Batman’ series, while Benedict Samuel portrayed him on ‘Gotham’.  Like Firefly, The Mad Hatter has never appeared in a live-action movie.

Both characters have also appeared in numerous animated adaptations and video games.

In addition, Reeves’ screenplay reportedly includes Alfred and Commissioner Gordon, as well as possibly Robin.  With all these criminals running loose, Pattinson’s Batman will need the backup.

Filming is expected to begin later this year to be released on June 25, 2021.
