At long last, Joe Hill’s comic book series ‘Locke & Key’ is coming to live-action on Netflix.  The streaming service has announced that the series will premiere on February 7th.  That’s roughly around the same time that another comic book adaptation, ‘The Umbrella Academy’ debuted on the service this past year.  That show was a hit and was renewed for a second season.  Hopefully, ‘Locke & Key’ will prove to be equally successful.

Carlton Cuse, Aron Eli Coleite, and Meredith Averill developed the program.  It was originally slated to air on FOX in the 2010-11 TV season.  After the pilot wasn’t picked up to series, even after being shown at San Diego Comic-Con, plans switched to turning Hill’s comic into a movie trilogy.  Then, plans reverted back to television with Hulu ordering a pilot directed by ‘It’s Andy Muschietti.  But Hulu passed and Netflix ordered a new, different pilot.  Muschietti had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts, but he remains attached as an executive producer.  Cuse and Averill serve as showrunners, and Cuse co-wrote the pilot with Coleite.  Michael Morris (‘Bloodline’) directed the first two episodes.

Locke & Key is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family. After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death. As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens — and will stop at nothing to steal them.

Darby Stanchfield stars as Nina Locke, the family matriarch.  Bill Heck will portray her ill-fated husband Rendell.  As for the kids, Connor Jessup portrays the oldest kid, Tyler, Emilia Jones plays middle child, Kinsey, and Jackson Robert Scott plays youngest Locke, Bode.  Scott is the only cast member who was previously part of the Hulu pilot that continued in his role after Netflix ordered a new one.

The cast also includes Sherri Saum as Ellie Whedon, a teacher at the kids’ new school who has a past connection to Rendell and Key House; Griffin Gluck as Gabe, a new friend of Kinsey’s; Laysla de Oliveira as Dodge the demon antagonist; Petrice Jones as Scot Kavanaugh, who becomes fixated on Kinsey; and Thomas Mitchell Barnet as Sam Lesser, a loner that falls under Dodge’s control.

Recurring cast members are Steven Williams as kindly teacher, Joe Ridgeway; Kevin Alves as “life of the party” Javi, who becomes Tyler’s new best friend; Asha Bromfield as “horror nerd” Zadie Wells; and Felix Mallard as Lucas Caravaggio.
