You can’t have ‘Star Trek: Picard‘ without Patrick Stewart but now showrunner Michael Chabon has shared exactly how the legendary actor impacted the series. We’ve all heard that Stewart initialy declined the production so you have to wonder how that changed into not only his participation but a potential second season already in the works. The reason behind this is that Stewart was able to have a direct impact over the entire course of this new series.

As to Stewart’s inclusion throughout the entire process of developing the new series, Chabon shares:

” [We got] huge, huge just priceless input from Sir Patrick Stewart. … The things he told us, the things he said he was interested in doing and was not interested in doing. The acting challenges he was looking for and the things that he felt were old challenges that he had already risen to, and he was not interested in doing again. We took all that so seriously, like gospel. The word of God, really, and we obeyed.”

With Stewart having played Jean-Luc Picard for the entire run of the character over seven seasons and four films as well as inclusions in other media, it should come as no surprise that the series would want his input. Thankfully, the want to create ‘Star Trek: Picard’ was equal with that of wanting the actor to bring his A-Game and be fully invested in what they were creating. According to Chabon, some of the aspects which drew the actor back were that:

“We really tried to tailor the story to suit the actor, to suit the thinker, the man who had given a lot of thought over the long years that he had not played Jean-Luc Picard to what it was that made Picard interesting to him, and what he thought was going to be interesting about Jean-Luc Picard in this fairly late stage of his life. What was important to Patrick Stewart looking around at the world that we’re living in now.”

I’m not at all surprised that Stewart wanted to use this upcoming tale to discuss contemporary issues as most of “Star Trek” has done that throughout the years. I’m just curious as to which topics we’ll see addressed and how.

Are you thrilled that Patrick Stewart was able to weigh in on the direction of Jean-Luc Picard’s future for ‘Star Trek: Picard’? Were you at all surprised as to how much input the actor had on the development of this series? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
