Dan Aykroyd Will Appear In Jason Reitman's 'Ghostbusters 2020'

Dan Aykroyd has confirmed that he and “some” of the original actors from the first two ‘Ghostbusters’ movies are returning for Jason Reitman’s upcoming sequel/reboot.

While appearing on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he stated:

“I’m not in the pictures so much anymore. We’ve got the Ghostbusters movie that we’re working on now, and I will have to be performing in that — it’s really good… Now Ivan Reitman’s son Jason has written a new movie, called — well, it’s gonna be Ghostbusters, the third movie… It’ll be all, most of the original people. And then young stars… Yes, some from the original.”

Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts have expressed plans to return.  As of July, Ernie Hudson was not set to return.  Rick Moranis is basically retired.  That leaves Bill Murray, who famously kind of hates ‘Ghostbusters’.

Aykroyd is still optimistic that Murray will pop up in the new film:

“We’re hoping.  Yeah, we’re hoping. And then the new cast.”

Murray did make a cameo in Paul Feig’s 2016 female-fronted reboot, which was unrelated to the original movies, but it is believed he did so in hopes that this version would replace the original and he wouldn’t have to deal with people bugging him about making another ‘Ghostbusters’ anymore.  That didn’t work.

But, Murray said in June that he was open to returning, and he has reportedly read Reitman’s script, so the ball’s in his court now.

Reitman’s new ‘Ghostbusters’, which is being referred to as ‘Ghostbusters 2020’ stars Carrie Coon (‘Fargo’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’) as the mother of two teens, played by Finn Wolfhard (‘Stranger Things’) and Mckenna Grace (‘Captain Marvel’).  After moving to their new small town, they discover some supernatural secrets… presumably ghosts… which they have to bust.  Paul Rudd co-stars as one of the kids’ teacher.
