Annie Potts

Will Annie Potts return as the wry receptionist Janine Melnitz in Jason Reitman‘s sequel to the original ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise?  It sounds likely, as she was recently asked about Sigourney Weaver‘s comments that “It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!”

Potts is busy promoting ‘Toy Story 4’, in which she returns to voice Little Bo Peep, but when asked about Weaver’s recent declaration, Potts teased, “I have heard some things. If it’s true, what I’ve heard… Yeah, I think it’s gonna happen…”  When asked if she would return to play Janine, she replied:

“I think I will.”

Potts’ interview with Los Angeles’ KTLA is mostly in reference to ‘Toy Story 4’, but if you’d like to watch the whole segment, it is below.  Her ‘Ghostbusters’ comments come around the 3-minute mark.

Potts returned for a cameo as a hotel clerk in Paul Feig‘s 2016 reboot of ‘Ghostbusters’, but Jason Reitman’s film is a direct sequel to the first two, so she would be back as Janine.

In the original 1984 movie, Janine was smitten with Harold Ramis‘ Egon Spengler, but by the sequel, she had shifted her attention to Rick Moranis’ Louis Tully.  It isn’t likely that either will be in the upcoming film.  Ramis is deceased, although Reitman heavily hinted that he may appear via CGI.  Moranis is mostly retired, preferring to stick to voice work.  He was the one living main cast member of the original franchise that turned down a cameo in Feig’s reboot.

Beyond Weaver and now Potts, it isn’t known who “the guys” are that will also be returning.  Presumably, they will be Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Earnie Hudson, but we’ll have to wait and see for certain.

But the main cast of Reitman’s picture is headed up by Carrie Coon as a single mother, who may be related to one of the original Ghostbusters, possibly Egon.  Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard will play her kids.  Based on Reitman’s comments, Grace’s character is at the center of this film.

‘Ghostbusters 3’ is due to be released on July 10, 2020.
