Eternals

Fans gathered for the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con got quite a surprise as the cast of the upcoming movie ‘Eternals’ appeared in the flesh, including Angelina Jolie!  Also present were Richard Madden who stars as Ikaris in the film, along with Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari (who, she noted is the first deaf character in the MCU), Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Don Lee as Gilgamesh (the Forgotten One), Lia McHugh as Sprite, and Salma Hayek as Ajak, the Eternals’ leader.  Jolie is playing Thena, not Sersi as it was widely rumored before now.

Director Chloé Zhao declared, “I just wanted to do a Marvel movie!”  She then described the movie, saying:

“It’s about this group of incredible immortals but through their journey we really get to explore what it means to be human and humanity on our time on this planet.”

Madden added:

“The Eternals are a race of immortal aliens sent to Earth by the Celestials to protect humankind from the Deviants.”

The actors then took time to discuss each of their characters.

Hayek said of Ajak:

“I take my inspiration from our leader Chloé. It takes a strong woman to do a movie like this. The way she approaches leadership as a strong woman, she sees them as a family. There’s a lot of mother instincts in the Eternals…I feel honored to be part of a movie which will show people who aren’t represented (on screen).”

Henry said, “Fastos moves from his heart,” while Lee expressed, “I can’t wait to show you the power of Gilgamesh.”  He later stated  that Gilgamesh was stronger than The Hulk… only after making sure that Mark Ruffalo wasn’t present.

Jolie stated:

“I’m so excited to be here. I’m going to work 10 times harder because I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, to be a part of this family, I know what we all need to do. We have all read the script. We have all know what the task ahead is and we are all going to be working very very hard. I’m training. I am thrilled. Thank you so much.”

‘Eternals’ was scripted by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.

Neither Keanu Reeves nor Millie Bobby Brown were announced, dispelling previous rumors that they were in talks for this film.

While it doesn’t appear that filming has begun, ‘Eternals’ is scheduled to open on November 6, 2020.
