Power Rangers

Hasbro, who now owns the ‘Power Rangers’ brand outright, has plans to bring the multicolored crusaders back to the big screen but it won’t be with the cast of the 2017 movie.  This was widely expected to be the case, but it was confirmed by Dacre Montgomery, who starred in the 2017 film as Jason Lee Scott the Red Ranger, but is now better known for playing Billy Hargrove on ‘Stranger Things’.

As part of promoting ‘Stranger Things 3’, Montgomery participated in a Reddit AMA, and was asked about the ‘Power Rangers’ movie that is reportedly in development, and he replied:

“I think there is a [Power Rangers] movie in the works but it’s not with me and the cast. So yes [another Power Rangers movie will take place], but not with us.”

While the 2017 film ended with a post-credits stinger teasing the introduction of Tommy the Green Ranger, the first movie, directed by Dean Israelite, was neither a critical nor commercial success, earning just $140 million worldwide.  The failure of the movie, which was released by Lionsgate, led to Haim Saban, who had created the brand, selling the entire property to Hasbro last May.

Now Hasbro is working with Paramount, who co-created the hit ‘Transformers’ film franchise, and the ‘GI Joe’ movies that have been… less successful, to bring the ‘Power Rangers’ back to cinemas.

The cast of the 2017 ‘Power Rangers’, who were all virtually unknown at the time, have gone on to bigger and better things.

Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin, and Becky G.

Naomi Scott played Princess Jasmine in one of this year’s biggest hits, Disney’s ‘Aladdin’, and will co-star in the highly-anticipated reboot of ‘Charlie’s Angels’.

RJ Cyler went on to appear in the critically-acclaimed film ‘White Boy Rick’ and the Netflix hit ‘Sierra Burgess is a Loser’, and the TV shows ‘Black Lightning’ and ‘Swamp Thing’, as well as the reboot of ‘Scream: The TV Series’.

Dacre Montgomery, of course, has had the major role of bully Billy Hargrove on Season 2 and 3 of ‘Stranger Things’.

Ludi Lin appeared in last winter’s $1 billion-grossing ‘Aquaman’, and an episode of ‘Black Mirror’.  He is reportedly in the running to star in Disney’s Marvel movie ‘Shang-Chi’.

Becky G was already an established Spanish-language singer before ‘Power Rangers’, and she has continued to thrive.  Her single “Cuando Te Besé” featuring Paulo Londra went Triple Platinum and hit #1 in Argentina, and “La Respuesta” with Maluma hit #13 on the US Latin charts and went Gold.  At the 2018 Latin American Music Awards, she won Favorite Female Artist, and Favorite Urban Song for “Mayores” ft. Bad Bunny.

Were you a fan of the ‘Power Rangers’ movie?  Are you upset that the upcoming movie will be a hard reboot?
