Avengers: Endgame To Have Theatrical Re-Release

‘Avengers: Endgame’ is making a last ditch effort to take down its greatest rivals, and I don’t mean Thanos.  ‘Endgame’ is currently the second highest-grossing movie in the US, trailing behind ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, and worldwide, trailing behind ‘Avatar’.  In hopes of stomping past those, Marvel Studios is re-releasing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ this weekend with new footage.

It was already announced that the movie itself won’t be altered or extended.  Instead, some new material will be tacked on after the credits.  (‘Endgame’ was famously the first Marvel Studios film to not include a post-credits scene.)

What is being added?  Four things.

Apparently some– but not all– screenings will add an introduction by the Russo Brothers, like the ones featured on the DVD/Blu-Ray releases.  In fact, this same intro and all of this other new footage will most likely be on the DVD/Blu-Ray releases.

That includes a seven-minute tribute to Stan Lee.  Lee made his final film cameo in ‘Endgame’ as a fast-driving hippie zipping past the New Jersey military base where the Tesseract was being stored.

The intro and Stan Lee tribute aren’t technically scenes, though.  The added scene will reportedly feature The Hulk.  It isn’t known what happens in the scene, but it is said that it “fits more as a post-credit thing,” meaning it’s probably humorous.  It *MIGHT* clarify that The Hulk is out of service for a while, after suffering grave injuries from snapping his fingers while wearing the Infinity Gauntlet.  It was clear that he was hurt, but what many viewers might not realize is that these injuries are supposed to be so bad that it will prevent him from returning in future movies in an active role.  So like Captain America, Iron Man, and Black Widow, this is another pillar of the MCU that is being taken off the board, moving forward.  But that’s just a guess.

And finally, there will be a teaser for ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ which opens for previews next Tuesday, just days after this ‘Endgame’ re-release.

What is not included is the deleted scene of Katherine Langford as grown-up Morgan Stark, who Tony would have encountered after he died, in a scene that mirrored the scene between Thanos and little Gamora in ‘Infinity War’.

Joe and Anthony Russo previously addressed why this scene was removed, and basically, it boils down to, it just didn’t work.

Anthony Russo: “What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter.  So it wasn’t ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level.”

Joe Russo: “The intention was that his future daughter, because these films are dealing with magic, his future daughter forgave him and sort of gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant.  But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie.”

Not to mention Pepper telling him it was okay to let go because they would be “okay” was powerful enough.

Some fans suspected that this scene was what was being added, but it doesn’t really work as a post-credits add-on.  It may be on the DVD/Blu-Ray however.

Will you be headed back to theaters this weekend to see this extra footage and to helpfully push ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to the #1 movie of all time position?
