Benedict Wong

Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was among those that got snapped in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, meaning that he was gone for a whole five years during the events of ‘Endgame’.  Does that mean that the Earth was defenseless against supernatural threats during that time?  For all anyone knew, he was gone for good.

Though he doesn’t seem 100% positive, Benedict Wong thinks that his character, Wong may have stepped up into the role of Sorcerer Supreme for those intervening years… despite what the internet thinks.

You may recall the flood of Wong memes that flooded the internet after ‘Infinity War’ summing up his perceived contribution to the film’s conflict.  If not, here’s a little refresher.

But, while appearing this weekend at San Antonio’s Celebrity Fan Fest, Wong set the record straight, saying:

“He did a lot in those five years.  I’m writing a book there, guys, if you want to find out. I’m not really, but you know some sort of… He quite possibly because he was defending the Sanctum yeah. He didn’t dip, whoever wrote those memes!”

During a Reddit AMA in March, when asked if Wong became the Sorcerer Supreme, he replied:

“Why not!  He’s currently guarding The Sanctum.”

Of course, Wong returned in ‘Endgame’, leading an army of wizards to help in the final battle with Thanos and his forces.  Was that enough to make up for dipping out at the beginning of ‘Infinity War’?  That’s up to the viewer to describe.

Wong (the actor and the character) are expected to return in ‘Doctor Strange 2’, to be directed by the returning Scott Derrickson.  The sequel is expected to begin filming in 2020.

‘Endgame’ is still playing in some theaters, but the Blu-Ray isn’t due out until December 11!  Ugh!
