Stranger Things 3 Console Game

In April, Netflix announced that fans would be able to enter the adventure of ‘Stranger Things’ themselves by playing the upcoming video game named– what else?– ‘Stranger Things 3: The Game’ which will be released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on July 4th, the same day that the new season is released on Netflix.  Despite being offered on the newest gaming platforms, in keeping with the time setting for the show, ‘Stranger Things 3: The Game’ features vintage ’80s-style 8-bit graphics.

Now comes word that a new ‘Stranger Things’ mobile game is also set to be launched, and it is described as “a location-based RPG/puzzler.”  That seems to mean that, like in the case of ‘Pokémon Go’, a player has to go outside and… like… walk around and stuff.  (Hard pass!)  This is in keeping with the characters on the show, who are always outside either walking or riding their bikes.

Unlike the 8-bit style console game, the app turns the heroes of Hawkins into ’80s-style cartoon characters.  As Netflix stated:

“The mobile game will reimagine the Stranger Things universe in the style of an 80’s Saturday morning cartoon.  Through location-based mechanics and Google Maps integration, players can explore The Upside Down hidden around them in their daily travels and work with fellow fans to fight back its emerging evils.”

(Oh, so you also have to talk to strangers?!  Even harder pass!)

This game is a bit further off, in that it won’t launch until next year.  It will be available on iOS and Android platforms.

In a statement, Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen expressed:

“Our core focus will be to deliver on Stranger Things’ rich and intense themes like friendship and supernatural adventure, and translate these into snack-sized entertainment on your mobile device.”

Back to the 8-bit console game for a sec, one bit of new information was announced– it will feature 12 playable characters.  It’s really easy to figure out who they will be– Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, Max, Hopper, Joyce, Nancy, Jonathan, Steve, and Billy.  The gameplay seems to follow the events of Season 3, as new locations like the Starcourt Mall, including the Scoops Ahoy! ice cream parlor, and the community pool are settings, as are more familiar places like the General Store where Joyce works, and the Byers Home.  It looks as though as part of the game, players have to give Billy a shower.  (Hey-Ohhhhh!)  For whatever reason, he showers in his pants.  (Boo.)
