Before you head to Baskin Robbins for a ‘Stranger Things’-based Demogorgon Sundae, stop by Burger King for an Upside Down Whopper.  Yep, Burger King is the latest marketing partner for the upcoming third season of ‘Stranger Things’, following Coca-Cola, Baskin Robbins, and as was just announced, Nike.

And Burger King’s tie-in is the most basic.  It’s LITERALLY just a Whopper… Upside Down.  And it’s only being served at eleven (Eleven, get it?!) locations– in Miami, Houston, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.  Notice there’s not one participating restaurant anywhere in Indiana!  WTF, BK?!  Although technically EVERY Burger King can participate by, y’know, turning a Whopper upside down.  The special version at the participating locations will be served in retro ’80s packaging.  (Coming soon to a side of the road near you!  Because we need more garbage.)

Only these eleven locations will be selling special merchandise– T-shirts, crowns, ketchup packets (?!), and pins.  I’m not sure if that info is 100% accurate.  I think they might be selling t-shirts and pins, and giving away crowns and ketchup packets, because who would pay for either of those?  Then again, considering that BK charges you extra per chicken nugget dipping sauce, I wouldn’t put it past them.

Here is the promo advertising the Upside Down Whopper:

I wonder if you can get New Coke for your beverage.  It would only make sense.  The Burger King promotion kicks off on June 21.

All of these tie-ins may seem excessive, but keep in mind that Netflix doesn’t run commercials, so they need to turn to partnerships such as these to make money– keep in mind how expensive ‘Stranger Things’ must be to make– and it doubles by serving as advertisement for the show out in the real world.

‘Stranger Things 3’ will be released on Netflix on July 4.
