The Batman

Forbes writer Mark Hughes says that he dropped a major scoop back on January 17, but that no one picked up on it.  In writing about Warner Brothers’ upcoming DC Movies, he mentioned that Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ will pit the fledgling Dark Knight against multiple villains.  To reiterate, Hughes tweeted a new message that indicates that there will likely be three major foes, with others peppered into supporting/background roles.

Personally, I was more entertained by the tweet that Hughes was replying to “If those four villains don’t team up and at some point shoot dehydration rays at the UN Security Council, then just don’t even bother,” a reference to the immortally cheesy 1966 ‘Batman’ movie in which Catwoman, The Joker, The Penguin, and The Riddler teamed up to turn a bunch of people to dust.  (Take that, Thanos!)  Along the way, Batman (Adam West) had to spray a rubber shark with Shark-Repellant Bat-Spray and run around trying to dispose of a huge cartoonish bomb.

Presumably, that’s not the plot of ‘The Batman’, which is a damn shame.  This ‘Year One’-like approach means that one major villain is probably some boring gangster like Carmine Falcone.  There was talk last year that Warner Brothers was hoping to use The Penguin in a movie, with ‘Birds of Prey’ mentioned as a possibility.  But that movie features Black Mask and Victor Zsasz, so maybe The Penguin will waddle into ‘The Batman’ instead.

One character guaranteed not to be included is The Joker, as Todd Phillips has a stand-alone ‘Joker’ movie on the way, and there don’t appear to be any plans for Jared Leto to reprise his version from ‘Suicide Squad’.

Considering that no one knows what ‘The Batman’ is even about, it could end up with Condiment King, Kite Man, and Crazy Quilt.  Who knows?

Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ will swoop into theaters on June 25, 2021.
