Well, that’s that.  Yesterday, the internet exploded with the rumor that Armie Hammer was closed to signing the deal to star in Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’.  The rumor was quickly denied, but there was nothing said officially one way or the other.  But it looks like we can lay it to rest for good, as the actor himself has stated:

“No one who can actually give me the job has asked me if I’m interested. I don’t even know if they’re done – I think they’re still working on a script. I don’t think that they’re close to production but I can conclusively tell you that no one has checked my availability, which is a bummer.”

Hammer makes it sound like there isn’t a drop of truth to the rumor, which does make sense.  As I stated yesterday, Hammer is 32 and will turn 33 this year.  ‘The Batman’ is expected to focus on a younger Dark Knight, early in his career.  Of course, Christian Bale was 31-32 when he made ‘Batman Begins’ which also took place during the early days of Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting career.

This is also just buzz, so don’t take it as fact, but according to reports, Warner Brothers hasn’t met with any actors yet, but are allegedly looking for someone younger than Hammer.

Hammer was actually cast to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in George Miller’s aborted ‘Justice League: Mortal’ back in 2007.  The film was weeks from going into production when the Hollywood writers’ strike derailed it. After the strike was over, Warner Brothers changed its mind and scrapped ‘Justice League: Mortal’ and instead decided to film solo movies with ‘Green Lantern’, ‘The Flash’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ in order to more slowly build a shared universe.  Unfortunately, after ‘Green Lantern’ crashed and burned, they had to go back to the drawing board.

It sounds as though Hammer would be up for playing Batman, but based on what we know about the upcoming film, it doesn’t sound like he would be in the running.

Are you relieved or disappointed that it doesn’t look as though Armie Hammer will play Batman?

Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ is rumored to begin filming in November and will be released on June 25, 2021.
