MILD SPOILER ALERT: This article includes MILD SPOILERS for ‘Birds of Prey’, so proceed with caution.

Charlene Amoia has joined the cast of ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’, which is already filming.  Amoia will play Maria Bertinelli, the mother of The Huntress, a.k.a. Helena Bertinelli.  Mary Elizabeth Winstead portrays the adult Helena in the movie.  Maria’s husband is the crime boss Franco Bertinelli.  The struggle between rival mafia bosses seems to play a major role in the film.  In the comics, at least, Helena’s family is assassinated, which drives her to eventually become The Huntress.  Rumor has it, she works closely with the villain Black Mask before she learns that he was instrumental in her family’s deaths.

In ‘Birds of Prey’, Amoia joins Winstead, as well as Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary.

Cathy Yan is directing with a script by Christina Hodson.  The events of ‘Birds of Prey’ take place in a Gotham City that has been abandoned by Batman.

Amoia may be best known for playing Wendy the waitress on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ for many years.  She is a soap opera vet, having starred on ‘Port Charles’, ‘Passions’, ‘The Young and the Restless’, ‘Days of Our Lives’, and ‘General Hospital’.  She most recently appeared on an episode of ‘The Flash’.  Other TV credits on her resumé include ‘Dexter’, ‘Nip/Tuck’, ‘90210’, ‘Criminal Minds’, ‘Castle’, ‘House’, ‘Glee’, ‘Shameless’, ‘NCIS’, ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’, ‘The Mentalist’, ‘Bones’, ‘Sleepy Hollow’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, and ‘9-1-1’.  She recently wrapped another crime thriller, ‘Adverse’, which stars Mickey Rourke, Sean Astin, Penelope Ann Miller, and Lou Diamond Phillips.

‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ opens in theaters on February 7, 2020.
