New details have emerged about ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’ thanks to Total Film Magazine. Even though the main draw of these types of movies are the monsters themselves, they need the human cast to deliver the more emotional beats to hook viewers and draw them into the story. And this film has an amazing cast of actors in its important human roles.
Millie Bobby Brown seems to play the focal character, whose name has been revealed to be Madison Russell. Her mother, Dr. Emma Russell is played by ‘Paranormal Activity”s Vera Farmiga, while Kyle Chandler plays Madison’s father and Emma’s ex-husband. His name was not listed, but it appears that his name is Mark.
“Emma Russell is kidnapped by nefarious forces, who are then tracked by Chandler’s character and a rescue team which includes O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s character and Zhang Ziyi’s character which is referred to as a mysterious scientist…”
Chandler is perhaps still best known for starring in ‘Friday Night Lights’, although he has since appeared in a number of projects like Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’, and films like ‘Game Night’ and ‘Manchester by the Sea’. Jackson is the son of Ice Cube and played a younger version of his dad in ‘Straight Outta Compton’. He was also seen in ‘Den of Thieves’ and is signed on for the sequel. His character in ‘Godzilla’ is reportedly named Chief Warrant Officer Barnes.
Zhang’s character’s name isn’t known at this time, but since she is described as “mysterious,” that may be fitting. Zhang most recently appeared in ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ on Netflix. Her first major role was in ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’.
In other reveals, apparently director Michael Dougherty based all of the monsters’ designs on the Toho originals, and Toho signed off on all of them.
“Mothra will be portrayed as somewhat of a goddess. Rodan is the underdog but may play a crucial role in how the film unfolds. Madison has a strange connection to Mothra as well…”
As Dougherty stated:
“Toho had final approval on the creatures. I had to go to Japan and do a big presentation — which was intimidating. Thankfully, they signed off on everything without hesitation… I have such a deep-rooted love for these creatures. These aren’t just giant monsters, they’re ancient gods… Some of my earliest memories are watching Godzilla movies. My mother was Vietnamese, and Godzilla movies and kung fu movies were the only places I could see Asian people on TV. He’s been with me my entire life.”
While the designs of the monsters are being kept under wraps for now, there was a tease of what to expect from King Ghidorah:

There will probably be a long wait before we get a better view of Godzilla and his fellow titans, since the film doesn’t open for another half-year. But so far, what do you think?
‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’ opens on May 31st, 2019. The cast also includes Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins, Aisha Hinds, Thomas Middleditch, Ken Watanabe, and Bradley Whitford.
