Neil Marshall’s gritty reboot of ‘Hellboy’ is still a year away from release, but principal photography is completed and now it’s all in post-production. David Harbour steps aboard as Mike Mignola‘s half-demon, half-human comic book protagonist– a role embodied twice by Ron Perlman in Guillermo del Toro’s two films in the franchise. Costarring with Perlman were Doug Jones as fish-man Abe Sapien, John Hurt as Hellboy’s adopted father Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm and Selma Blair as love interest pyrokinetic Liz Sherman.
All have moved on. Blair will appear in the upcoming ‘Heathers’ TV series and is currently promoting her horror thriller ‘Mom and Dad’ which costars Nicholas Cage. But when asked about her feelings regarding the new ‘Hellboy,’ she wished those involved good luck, but offered a very honest reaction:
“God, you know, people are fans of Hellboy and also fans of Guillermo. So part of us, the ones that were so loyal to Guillermo, our hearts are broken that it didn’t work out with the greatest third installment ever written that I wish I could play more than anything in the world. But I truly hope that Mike Mignola has his vision out there for the darker Hellboy come to light, and I’m sure he will, and David Harbour is excellent and everyone involved, but no my heart is broken.”
While the first ‘Hellboy’ was a sleeper hit in 2004, the sequel ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ was not as well received, effectively squashing plans for a third movie in the cycle. It sounds as though del Toro had quite a doozy planned, based on Blair’s reaction.
What do you think? Are you upset that we’ll never get to see del Toro’s vision for a third ‘Hellboy’? Or are you glad that the new film is a fresh start?
‘Hellboy’ directed by Neil Marshall, stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Brian Gleeson, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell, Sophie Okenedo, Kristina Klebe and Allistair Petrie and will hit theaters on January 11, 2019.
