Godzilla: King Of Monsters

It’s always awesome when you find out that an actor isn’t just in a big-budget action movie for the paycheck, but because he (or she) is a legitimate fan of the brand. That seems to be the case here, where we have star-on-the-rise O’Shea Jackson Jr. who is starring in next year’s ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’.

2014’s ‘Godzilla’ was a bit of a dud.  So for the follow-up, Warner Brothers is essentially rebooting the whole thing and throwing in everything the ‘Godzilla’-verse has to offer, including Rodan, Mothra and Jackson’s clear favorite King Ghidorah.

Here’s what the actor had to say to Collider about the film:

“As a Godzilla fan, I know that I was shocked to find out that the second movie has King Ghidorah, like, King Ghidorah is the Godzilla bad guy, like, three-headed golden dragon that shoots lightning, is gonna be in the movie that I’m in! We got Mothra, we got Rodan, and we got King Ghidorah all in the same film, and in the last scene between Godzilla and King Ghidorah, I promise you, you will never forget it, in your life. As a nerd, I am foaming at the mouth to get in the editing room… Godzilla will be the number 1 movie. The way that [Godzilla] and Ghidorah fight… man… Kong better bring some shit.”

Here’s hoping that the film lives up to the excitement that Jackson has about the battles!  As he referenced, Warner Brothers already has a ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ film slated for release in 2020 to follow up ‘King of Monsters’.

Michael Dougherty (‘Krampus’, ‘Trick ‘R Treat’) directed ‘King of Monsters’, taking over for Gareth Edwards who helmed the first ‘Godzilla’.  Dougherty co-wrote the screenplay with Max Borenstein and Zach Shields.

Jackson stars along with Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Charles Dance, Vera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins, Van Marten, Thomas Middleditch, Anthony Ramos, Ken Watanabe, Bradley Whitford and Ziyi Zhang.  (Zhang and Marten are also slated to return in ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’, which will be directed by Adam Wingard.)

While Jackson is a newer face in Hollywood, you may already be familiar with his father O’Shea Jackson Sr. (better known as Ice Cube).  Jackson Jr.’s first film was ‘Straight Outta Compton’ in which he played a younger version of his father.  He has since appeared in ‘Ingrid Goes West’ and ‘Den of Thieves’ which just opened this weekend.  He is currently shooting the comedy ‘Flarsky’ with Charlize Theron and Seth Rogan.

‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’ is set to trash theaters on March 22, 2019.
