the punisher

Though Netflix and Marvel are still being deliberately vague on when ‘The Punisher’ series is going to debut later this year on the streaming service (though I will admit the mystery of it does have me intrigued, which I guess is the point), their marketing campaign continues, this week with a slew of new images from the show (including Frank Castle in full military gear, above) and a new synopsis for the series, which you can read here:

After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone.

When we last saw Frank at the end of ‘Daredevil’ Season 2, he had just helped Matt Murdock drive off the Hand forces on the roof of their Headquarters, and had blown up his family home after finally exacting revenge on those responsible for the deaths of his family members. Now apparently Frank has discovered a conspiracy theory that makes him leave New York to investigate, as it may go all the way back to his military origins. This conspiracy could also be what ties Karen Page back into the story as her resources and skills as a reporter, and friendship with Frank, could prove useful in figuring everything out. The synopsis also reveals that Frank is now known throughout New York as “The Punisher,” which means he has lost his anonymity and could lead to his adoption of the trademark Punisher costume, and help explain why he is seen sporting a beard and wearing hoodies in so many set photos, as he is trying to keep his identity a secret.
