Flatliners

Sony’s ‘Flatliners’ remake/sequel, directed by Niels Arden Oplev has a release date, September 29, 2017 and now has a creepy trailer.

The movie stars a group of medical students– played by Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna, Kiersey Clemons and James Norton– who begin experimenting with death, to see what happens when we die.  Things begin as legitimate medical experiments but soon turn into a reckless competition.  But things get out of hand when there turn out to be some unexpected, supernatural consequences.

The film also stars Kiefer Sutherland, who reprises the role of Nelson, a part he played in the original.  The original movie, which came out in 1990, also starred Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt.  Partially fueled by Roberts’ post-‘Pretty Woman’ fame, the original became a big hit and remains a cult classic.

If you aren’t familiar with the original movie, the remake also slightly echos ‘The Final Destination’ series, but in a more moody, atmospheric way than outright gore as well as films like ‘The Lazarus Effect’.  Director Oplev directed the original Swedish version of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ which starred Noomi Repace, so expect a similar moody feel for this film.

The film stars many familiar faces.  Ellen Page may be most recognizable to genre fans for playing Kitty Pryde in the ‘X-Men’ series.  She is also notable for appearing in such films as ‘Juno’ and ‘Inception’.  Nina Dobrev is of course best known for playing Elena on ‘The Vampire Diaries’.  Diego Luna recently starred in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ as pilot Cassian Andor.  Kiersey Clemons starred in the movie ‘Dope’ and signed on to play Iris West in Warner Brothers’ ‘The Flash’ movie, but that movie is being retooled with no director attached, so things may change there.  James Norton may not be that familiar to American audiences, but he has starred in numerous series in England, most recently ‘Grantchester’.
