Kiefer-Sutherland-flatliners

While it won’t be touched on too much in the film, we’ve just learned that the new ‘Flatliners‘ movie isn’t going to be a reboot but a sequel. Sony has yet to make this connection but while being interview by UK’s Metro we found out directly from Kiefer Sutherland (’24: Live Another Day’,’Touch’) that he will be reprising his role as Nelson from the original 1990 film by Joel Schumacher. We had previously learned that he would be joining the cast but this is the first official word as to who he would be playing in the film.

It will be interesting to see if any of the other original surviving cast members end up making a cameo as well.

Here is what Sutherland had to say when asked about his role in the film:

“I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film. I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes.”

On screen, he’ll be joining Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Kiersey Clemons, James Norton, Diego Luna, and quite a few other younger actors. While not a major character in the film, clearly Sutherland’s inclusion hints to their prior research popping up on the big screen when the new ‘Flatliners’ is released.

Are you starting to look forward to a new ‘Flatliners’ now that we know it won’t be a reboot? How much of the original film do you think may end up being referenced? Share your thoughts below!

‘Flatliners’ is set to be released on August 18th, 2017.
