star-wars-opening-crawl-a-long-time-ago

The opening crawl for ‘Star Wars‘ is an iconic piece of storytelling which has set the tone for the films but it is a bit surprising that we’ve learned that the upcoming crawl for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ will be three paragraphs long. That’s quite a bit considereing the movie is set to take place immediately after the events of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ While we have a lot of unanswered questions for characters and will likely immediately jump into the return of Luke Skywalker, it feels like we should be shown the major events of how things stand in a galaxy far far away and not told by a scroll.

Even so, I’m sure once the lights are down and the music queues up that everyone sitting in the theater will be cheering up a storm when we see the text roll up on the screen.

The news came up from writer and director Rian Johnson who was talking about the film:

“Even if it picks up right where the last one left off, there’s still a lot of unanswered questions about what the state of everything is. We were able to fill three paragraphs.”

This crawl could be referring to a few of what is happening with Finn and Kylo both recovering from their injuries,The Resistance reacting to the new war, Leia’s loss of Han Solo, an introduction to new characters, or the fallout of the mass murder committed by The First Order in the last installment throughout the free galaxy. There are a lot of areas to cover which might not be a focus in the film, and while I do appreciate that we’ll be getting an opening crawl, I’m not sure that we needed this long of one.

I’m sure that they’ll prove us wrong with important pieces of information sprinkled throughout it and even though I’m a little iffy on the size – I can’t wait to read it!
