When we learned last December that Sonequa Martin-Green was joining the cast of ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ many wondered if that spelled out the end of Sasha on ‘The Walking Dead.’ Anyone who followed the comics had decided that her fate was sealed, but when talking about it in January, it almost sounded like there wouldn’t be an issue with her shooting both shows. While that would have been true, fans recently saw her character die in the series, so it begged to question, was Sasha’s death due to Martin-Green’s new role on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’?
The truth is, the actress already knew her time on AMC’s zombie drama was over before accepting the gig on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and they didn’t write her off because she was interested in it. Not only that, but talks to join the upcoming Star Trek series didn’t even begin until she was already off the show.
According to Martin-Green:
“I’m just so grateful to God for it. It couldn’t have worked out more perfectly because what was happening on Walking Dead was already underway. It was the path. It was definitely in place. And then as we were going into the very end of the season, the very end of our shoot for the season — that’s when the opportunity for Star Trek came. And so I know some people might think that I left Walking Dead to do Star Trek, but it did not happen that way. It was after Walking Dead was already ending that the opportunity for Star Trek came.”
Her fans are excited to see her going from one iconic genre series to another and Martin-Green clearly is as well:
“I didn’t know what I was going to be doing next. And when Star Trek came I thought, Oh my goodness! This is…unspeakable! Like, what?? It’s going from such a goliath that reaches so many people in such a profound way, to a legacy. So basically going from legacy to legacy. Because Star Trek has definitely been printed in the hearts of so many people and has been since the ‘60s, obviously. To go from such a favorite show, to arguably the most favorite show of all time, is [laughs] I still think I’m catching my breath.”
As one of the most influential science fiction series of all time, it is obviously an honor to be the leading lady in the upcoming series, and I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing what they put together. I’m not a fan of the series starting off just on CBS All Access but know that the studio will give us other options to see it sooner than later.
