CBS has a lot at stake when it debuts ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ on its premium All-Access platform, and while many are annoyed as to not having an easy way to see it, the show will be taking the series in a bold new direction. Set in the past as the Federation is still getting things figured out and with humanity trying to work towards the near-Utopian society that we know will eventually arise in ‘The Next Generation,’ there are a lot of threats they’ll have to face first. We are aware that the series is set to follow Lt. Commander Michael Burnham who is played by Sonequa Martin-Green (‘The Walking Dead’) and she has some interesting commentary on the series.

According to Martin-Green:

“This iteration of Star Trek is going to have a different take than the others in the Star Trek canon. It’s going to be bigger, rawer and grittier… and the story’s going to build on itself. It’s going to be a tremendous journey.”

Since Star Trek has always been through the eyes of the captain, to be coming from [his second-in-command’s] mindset is going to be refreshing and challenging in ways that are very thrilling.”

With Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, and Archer having all been the leads before this series, we have primarily followed whatever the captains have had on their plate so it should be interesting to follow the person who isn’t directly in charge. At least, not for the entirety of the first season 13-episode run. It wouldn’t be unbelievable to see her have to make a few decisions on her own as we’ve seen many first officers do in the past.

As we haven’t hit the future that Gene Roddenberry envisioned for humanity quite yet, it will be interesting to see what darker areas of humanity or relations with aliens that will be coming up in the show.

Are you looking forward to ‘Star Trek: Discovery?’ What do you think will make this series “bigger, rawer, and grittier” than what we’ve seen before? Share your thoughts below!
