It was just over a week ago that Sir Patrick Stewart was still open to reprising his role of Professor X in future X-Men films though it looks like his time as the mutant leader is officially over. Recently ‘Logan‘ was screened at a SiriusXM Town Hall where Stewart was in attendance and broke the news. To say that it moved him is an understatement as we see what he says about a recent screening. He loved the character and the final Wolverine film, but to him, it felt like the end of an era.

Here is what Stewart had to say after he saw the full ‘Logan’ film a week back:

“A week ago, Friday night in Berlin, the three of us sat, watching the movie, and I was so moved by it, much more moved than I had been the first time of seeing it. Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing. Then, the movie ended… and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.'”

With how ‘Logan’ looks, I feel that there isn’t much room for Professor X in the future of the franchise. I’m not sure if he will live through the movie, but even so, he isn’t the mutant we’ve come to know and love. It feels doubtful that we’d have another film set in the future to include him in and the only real chance I could see is if there was a scene with Cable traveling through time that would make sense to include him in.

Are you sad to know that ‘Logan’ will be the last appearance of Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor X? Would you geek out if he ended up making a cameo down the line? Share your thoughts below True Believers!

Directed by James Mangold, ‘Logan’ stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and Dafne Keen and claws its way into theaters on March 3, 2017.
