While ‘Gotham‘ is coming back for a second season, the first did meet mixed reviews and Ben McKenzie (‘The O.C.,”88 Minutes’) explains where he think it went wrong. I do have to admit while I can point out a few issues, I think if anyone should have some perspective it is the actor who portrays Detective James Gordon himself! He doesn’t address my main complaint of too many villains but the two issues he does bring up are my second and third biggest problems with the series.

First off while we know that Jim Gordon and his partner Harvey Bullock can be rock stars at police work, they do happen to be a little too good in the series. McKenzie points out that:

“I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever. That was just a mistake. We should’ve never done it.”

I do know that a lot of these villains are just starting out but if they are going to eventually be giving Batman a run for his money than a few of them should have been a little tougher to catch. This got better as the season progressed but things still felt a little too easy for the detectives. With a city so immersed in crime, I feel that the pair should have more difficulty than they are.

Of course one of the bigger issues would be the multiple breaks that the series had to take. While adding episodes to the season was done due to decent ratings, the problem was the hiccups it caused in getting everything filmed and onto the small screen:

“We were ordered for 16. We were going to have one break and come back and finish the rest of them in terms of the airing, and then we added six more, so we had to break again and then we had to come back again. And it’s hard for the audience to follow that many changes in a series in terms of when it’s airing and when it’s not.”

Thanks to DVR’s and streaming services, this isn’t the end of the world but as the only person among my friends who was able to stick out the full season this didn’t earn it any points.

My mention above of too many villains on the series is only going to be getting worse in the second season. So far we already know that we’ll be getting more on The Joker as well as being introduced to: The Riddler, Firefly, Mad Hatter, Calendar Man, Hugo Strange, Mr. Freeze, Tigress, and more!
