In the latest bid for returning to its genre roots, Syfy has just picked up the rights to the comic series ‘Wynonna Earp.’ This classic by Beau Smith which was brought to us by IDW Publishing is being given a 13 episode first season run and stars Melanie Scrofano (‘RoboCop‘,’Saw VI’) in the lead role! She’ll be playing the great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp and works for The Monster Squad. Following in his infamous footsteps, she works with the US Marhsals, only in a secret department that tracks down fiends that are just a bit more sinister than your regular criminal.
Yes we’re talking about monsters and demons and ghosts (oh my!)
Joining Scrofano on the cast is Tim Rozon (‘Being Human’,’Instant Star’) who will be playing the “legendary con artist Doc Holliday” and Shamier Anderson (‘Defiance,’ ‘Constantine‘) who will be playing the “mysterious” Agent Dolls. Emily Andras (‘Lost Girl’,’Killjoys‘) is no stranger to working on Syfy shows and will be not only the Executive Producer but is set to be the showrunner as well.
According to Chris Regina who is the Senior Vice President of Programming at Syfy:
“Wynonna Earp is a unique contemporary western that will bring high octane, full-throttle, supernatural action to Syfy. It is wildly imaginative and we are excited to work with Seven24 Films, IDW Entertainment and Emily on this truly original concept that will showcase fun, stylized visuals and pure escapism.”
A modern western set with the descendants of infamous sharp shooters and lawmen who are now tasked with fighting demons? Sounds intriguing.
Andras adds that:
“Together with SEVEN24 Films, IDW Entertainment, and a virtual dream cast, I’m confident we have something special on our hands: a female-led supernatural series with grand themes of redemption, honor, and the struggle to define good vs. evil. Not to mention, a kickass biker babe fighting demon outlaws.”
I do hope her vision can be realized because the premise does sound like it could be a lot of fun. We’ll keep you updated as more details and the first official shots and trailer become available over the next few months.
