It’s worked so far with ‘The Flash‘ spinning off from ‘Arrow’ and carving out a name for itself. Now with the introduction of Brandon Routh as The Atom, we have yet another spin-off. Most assumed that the new show would focus on his character, but more names have been added to the mix, making it seem like more of a crossover series.
John Wesley Shipp, who plays Henry Allen (and who also played The Flash himself in the early 90s tv series), recently spoke at the Cape Comic Con 2015 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and let slip, “You guys know about ‘Legends’?…Firestorm…Victor Garber’s gonna be on it. Wentworth Miller. Captain Cold. They’re doing 13 episodes of that.”
In addition to The Atom, at least half of Firestorm (Garber as Martin Stein) and Captain Cold, Caity Lotz returns as The Canary along with Dominic Purcell as Heatwave with new actors revealed to be playing Hawkgirl and Rip Hunter.
Thirteen episodes is a small order (roughly half a full season), making this more of a miniseries. But with all these colorful characters in the mix, it could add a lot of depth and dimension to this rapidly expanding continuity. Is it possible that if ratings are strong that The CW could make this an ongoing series? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
The name ‘Legends’ has some basis in the DC comic book universe. It was the first major miniseries after ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ and established a new all-star Justice League and the Suicide Squad. The impact of this story wasn’t nearly as weighty as that of ‘Crisis,’ but it did establish a darker, more realistic tone for the comic line.
The one obstacle is that TNT already has a show called ‘Legends’, an espionage series starring Sean Bean and Ali Larter, which is confirmed to be returning for its second season. One speculation is the The CW will instead go with ‘Legends of the Future.’ The recent time travel elements introduced on ‘The Flash’ and the presence of Rip Hunter point to a cross-chronological theme for this show.
What do you think? Are you on board with this new series?
