Warner Television has released the first promotional images from the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ show being developed for CBS. The pair of photos presents the series’ star Melissa Benoist in costume for the first time.

Though there have been many versions of Supergirl over the years, this series will be drawing on the classic Kara Zor-El iteration of the character, created in 1959 by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino. And just in case there was any doubt, the costume certainly makes that clear!

Designed by ‘The Flash‘ and ‘Arrow’ veteran Colleen Atwood, Benoist’s costume at first glance invites comparisons to the one worn by Henry Cavill in ‘Man of Steel,’ largely due to the fact that both favor darker shades of red and blue. Following that comparison, however, the first this one might notice is that the “S-shield” on the Supergirl costume is more traditional than Cavill’s version. In fact, apart from the color scheme, this new costume continues the trend established by Grant Gustin’s Flash costume, in that it is very much reminiscent of Supergirl’s classic comic book costumes. In particular, the design falls somewhere between her original costume and the one featured in ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths.’

‘Supergirl’ is being developed for CBS by ‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’ executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. This connection begs the question of whether or not ‘Supergirl’ will be set in the same shared universe as those shows. For the moment, at least, the answer seems to be that while a crossover is not out of the question, the simple fact that the shows will be airing on different networks makes it somewhat less likely for the time being.

In addition to Melissa Benoist, the core cast so far includes Mehcad Brooks, Calista Flockhart, David Harewood and Chyler Leigh.

‘Supergirl’ is currently expected to debut on CBS in the fall.
