While there hasn’t been any solid movement going forward on ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes‘ (which was supposed to begin shooting this year), it sounds like the series is getting another adaptation – on the small screen! Sure we’ve heard that the director, Harald Zwart, has bowed out of doing the sequel but this is the first that we’ve heard anything about a TV show. That’s right! It looks as if Ed Decter (‘Unforgettable’, ‘There’s Something About Mary’) who is currently the showrunner on Syfy’s ‘Helix‘ is planning to develop the book series into a television franchise.

Honestly, with the lengthy story lines and multiple books that are out in Cassandra Clare’s young adult fantasy series, this feels like a better idea than just doing movies. It looks like Constantin Film, which is the production company that owns the rights to the series, is pushing to have this done quickly but have it done right.

According to Martin Moszkowicz who is the head of Constantin, “It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series. There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the ‘Mortal Instruments’ film. In the series we’ll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.” Which is very true!

I have a feeling that the television show will be its own take on the series and start over, though there is always a chance they will scrub the films and use this to continue on. The series feels like it could be a good fit on The CW though it would just be as comfortably on Syfy these days.

What network would you like to ‘The Mortal Instruments’ premiere on? Do you think they should continue as a sequel for the movie or start fresh? Do you think this gives us more of a chance for ‘The Infernal Devices’ and ‘The Dark Artifices’ to also see life on the small screen?
