Director Of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones’ Is No Longer Attached To The Sequel

Posted Tuesday, May 20th, 2014 03:49 pm GMT -4 by

the-mortal-instruments-city-of-ashesFans of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones‘ have been waiting to hear about the progress of a sequel after hearing about the second film being delayed due to low box office returns. While the original film did make a profit, it was at a slim margin which stalled the sequel’s progress. Initially, filming for ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes’ was scheduled to start in Toronto, Canada last September before being delayed to a 2014 production. Sadly now, we are getting a new stumbling block. It was just announced that the director of the first film, Harald Zwart (‘The Karate Kid’, ‘Agent Cody Banks’), is now out of the sequel’s creation.

While the studio has made no official announcements, as of this time Zwart stated that “The studio is still certain that they will make this movie, but it’s not me who directs it. I will focus on other projects in the future. Shadow Hunters was a great experience and it gave me a good window to show off.”

The other project Zwart is now involved in is the film ‘The 12th Man,’ a World War2 film based on the exploits of Jan Baalsrud.

Who will be replacing the director for the next installment? While Zwart confirmed leaving the production, there has been no announcement yet from Sony. I’d expect a new director to be picked in the near future for plans to move forward this year to remain intact. Hopefully, whoever the new director will be can capture the characters as well as Zwart did.

While the film may not have done well initially at the box office, the support has been terrific. Fans of the novels have done nothing but heap praise on the first film and have been clamoring for a sequel. Here’s hoping to a quick announcement and return to shooting as the film is supposed to be in the works this year!

Who do you think would be a good pick for filling Zwart’s shoes? Are you at all worried that with a change of directors there be an even longer delay before a sequel gets started? Share your thoughts below!

‘Mortal Instruments: City Of Ashes’ Synopsis

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

I’m sorry, but the fans didn’t exactly “praise” the movie…

    • go mortal instruments go

      Jerry Bruckheimer would be awsome

  • PepperB

Some directors I think would be good would be Len Wiseman, Zack Snyder or Frank Miller.

  • Britt

One of the biggest issues with this movie is that fans were watching it online. Everyone was watching it on youtube, etc and not going to see the movie.

    • Debbie Clay

I’m totally seeing it in the cinema and buying the DVD to support it :P xo

Francis Lawrence is perfect for the job!! I mean he did justice to Catching Fire. Though I do worried that we will have to wait a bit more. C’mon a movie adapted from book will never ever be perfect but Harald for the most part did what he could. The book is a very long and complicated. I know that he did his best to please us. I still have full hope for City of Ashes. Although the City of Bones movie wasn’t really like the book, I still love it (and I’m a big fan of the books though I was upset about how they gave away something for the future films and how Clary still had the cup). City of Ashes could be better. Well hopefully Francis Lawrence takes the job as he’s already finishing with Mockingjay Part 2.

The only line in this entire article I care about, “The studio is still certain that they will make this movie” WE ARE GETTING COA MOVIE!

He wasn’t the greatest director ever, so hopefully the next guy/girl will be awesome!

(I mean come on, skipping the Simon rat scene? The only reference to his vampireism is through the fact he doesn’t need his glasses :/)

  • deluded

Here’s to hoping the next director will be as big of a fan of the cast doing their own stunts whenever possible. Probably one of my favorite parts of the first one.

  • Secretly a shadowhunter

Not sure about names but who ever directed Divergent, I think would be great! Divergent stuck well to the book and had a lot of action and important scenes. Someone who thinks that is important should direct!! City of Bones Movie was great but could of been better :/

  • Clary Fray ;)

maybe it was the screenwriter and the script that was the issue and not the director, the movie wasn’t close to the book but Harald still did a great job in including all the characters and trying to keep the shadow world together. The fans didn’t “praise” the movie, it was more of us trying to watch it as much as possible to get the second and third movies to be made, and hopefully all 6!

  • stargirlms

Because Agramon is a fear demon, I see COA as one of if not the scariest book in the series (though COFA and COLS have their moments too) especially the boat scenes, I’d like to see some scary demons. How about a horror director who builds emotions well. Like Adam Green. My dream choice would be Guillermo Del Torro, but I imagine that is unlikely. Imagine him creating demons and faeries. I’d like to see more Shadow world details. Like using names of runes and discussing things like parabatai. I’d love a super whimsical seelie court scene and a dark Simon rebirth.

I really hope that a seasoned screenwriter is being used for city of ashes this time instead of a person with no experience. Also they need to find a director who is committed to staying very close to the book instead of concocting strange situations that have nothing to do with the story. Cassie Claire should be involved every step of the way. That is the only way this fabulous book is going to be made into a fabulous movie!

Please us fans need the sequel!!!!!!!! I’ve read the books (including the infernal instruments) and am hooked for life!

  • Wendy lea

Yessssss!!!!!!!! Please make COA!!!! But stick closer to the book this time. I loved the movie but the ending was wrong. I am so in love with all the characters but especially Jace!!! I want all the books made into movies so involve Cassandra Clare. Make her part of the process!!!!

  • Capture007

I am hopeful that the people involved and powers that be can see a pattern… Once upon a time, there was an amazing writer who wrote a book filled with fantasy, inner struggle and romance. The book was made into a film that received less than glowing remarks from its critics, it fared modestly at the box office, and many people questioned the possibility of making a second film. The main criticism was that the screenplay veered away from the book. However, the true fans of the book stood by the book and the movie and were desperate for another. They did make a second film…then a third… then a fourth…even a fifth (even though there were only four books in the “saga”)…. The movies and everyone involved did quite well. (Hint hint…. it would behoove the people in charge of making the second movie to get a great screenplay writer…stick with the actors that have such great chemistry…and get started…just a thought.)

  • The_Time_Hunter

Personally I think the first movie could have been better, but I still enjoyed it and City of Ashes was my favourite book so I can’t wait for the movie!!!!!!!!

  • Nesrine B

I think Joss Whedon can make it. …personally I’m 38 old and was waiting for a good fantasy saga. Since Lord of the rings or Harry potter. We didn’t have any better. Twilight was okay.
but the mortal instruments univers is really rich.

  • Katie

I feel like the big issue with the movie was that it was targeted to the wrong audience, it seemed too childish. There’s some pretty dark material in the books, it’s about freaking demon hunters, I really want to see some cool effects. I think if Sony can find a decent director and give them enough money for production the movie could do really really good. The best I hope for right now is for Cassandra to be involved, (she cast Robbie Sheehan (who is an amazing Simon)) and maybe we can fit the first 3 books (where the series was originally supposed to end) and if they do good enough they could do the last 3.

  • Telehicks

We need the sequel!!!!! Desperately!!!!!! All the characters were perfect in my opinion but the story line could have stuck closer to the book:)

I’m seriously wanting a sequel. I think they should stay closer to the books don’t shy away from the rough parts. Just stick closer to the book, we’re already in love with the characters and the story, use that movie magic to bring the pages to life for us

  • rayvenn

I’ve not read the book yet but I’ve watched the movie. I’ve read a lot of comments regarding the irregularities between the book and the first movie but it still haven’t change the fact that I really like the movie itself and I’m really looking forward to watch the second movie and I’m really hoping there will be more.. so please don’t ever change your minds and finish the whole series. Don’t hesitate, you can still fix the irregularities and make the next films better. PLEASE PLEASE WE WANT THE SEQUEL!!!

  • Irron Amigo

I hope that Aidan Turner donates a movie. Sorry had to look what they did with this beautiful and talented actor in the first part. Too bad his time and talent.

  • melissa

Really hoping for city of ashes! I just finished the series and the books are amazing ! Hope to hear more soon!

  • Kate

I want a sequel too!! I’ve watched the movie before I read it and I really enjoyed it so hopefully there would be a sequel… I think the change of director is okay though the movie may be more delayed, maybe Francis Lawrence could try or Gary Ross.

  • Nina Kendall

I really enjoyed all the books and I liked the first movie as well. But I hoped to see the scene where clary and jace were in a carriage ride to the bone city. If they would just put in all the important scenes especially when the characters get to know eachother. I really hope the movies to procede and also get better instead of worse.

  • Joanna

I have been a fan of the books for years and I was pretty happy with the first movie and enjoyed it. Even though they left out a bunch of stuff (which is understandable for books to film adaptations) I really really hope they continue the movies. It will be utterly devastating if they don’t. Please keep them coming :):):)

  • TMI

“The studio is still certain that they will make this movie”.
    I can’t wait!!

  • Donna

I can’t wait for the sequel. Didn’t read the books, saw the movie and loved it. Going to buy the books. Loved all the characters, always been a fan of Kevin Zeger’s but I love love Jace. Jace andClary belongs together.

  • Eira

Want someone who can work with teen angst, emotion and magic? Alfonso Cuaron.

  • Arantxa

I’m willing the project to start. When I saw the first movie I hadn’t read none of the books, but I was so excited that I read all Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices books. I know that the first movie did not do well on box office, but man! It helped me to discover my favorite book saga! Although ALL the plot differences movie/book I have to admit that I REALLY want to see the movies franchise grow with the second and so books into the big screen.
Maybe a director change is what the movie needs now. Let’s hope and see!

  • Commenter1987

I believe the casting was not good. Though Lily Collins is perfect for the female lead role, I am not sure if the same could be said about the male lead role, James B. something. I apologize, I honestly do not know his full name and I do not mean this in a sarcastic way.
Apart from this, the directing was done poorly based on several scenes that appeared insincere or just merely missed the mark like the scene where Lily and the male lead shares a romantic moment.
I am glad though that there will be a 2nd installment because I love Lily Collins and I think she acts really well based on the movies I’ve seen her esp. Stuck in Love. I hope the male
lead gets replaced but…it is just weird to see a different actor in the next installment. I am unsure as to how they are going to make the movie appealing not only to fans of the books but to those who have not read the book as well.

    • Believe_18

ahhh! No! Jace was perfect in the movie! He was my favorite part!

    • shadowhunter

Jamie Campell Bower did good in the first movie. And I don’t want to see a different actor play Jace. NO WAY.

  • sansaaaaa

Get the people behind Game of Thrones.

  • J&C4ever

well I am extremely glad that Sony and Constantine are finally in agreement to make COA, it would have been a shame not to let this series get its fair share out there in the theaters…this whole series was overshadowed by too many other big movies out there and COB never really had a chance to shine….now on the other hand there are not that many “big” office hits out there and this series only gets better with every book…I am in the middle of the final COHF and it has kept me on the edge of my seat since I picked it up. The casting was great and I think if they all get a chance to reprieve their roles in each films, they will grow even more into the characters and will be a great series both through the books and the films…As far as the adaption from book to film…the film makers kind of screwed the pooch on that in the first movie bringing out certain aspects of the upcoming books to the first film …hopefully they can fix that in the second film otherwise the series may suffer …I will still go to see all the films that come out with this series because I truly think this is one of the best series I have ever read.. and trust me I have read a bunch of series and this one was awesome!!!! …Film makers please see this series through,, I promise you wont regret it in the end…stay as close to the books as you can get and you will have one hell of a franchise on your hands…If I can get my step mother involved in this when she is one of the most skeptical readers I have ever met trust me it will be worth it!!!!!

  • dark angel

This first film was great and captured the essence of the books however they should have targeted a 20 plus audience, it should be marketed as badass shadowhunters and less fairytale. Don’t get me wrong we still love the fairytale side and the romance. My friends are all 30 plus and we can’t wait for the next movie. Just finished reading city of heavenly fire – most excellent too

    • Believe_18

I couldn’t agree more. Even though this series was labeled ‘young adult’ it has captured the hearts of the 20+ demographic WAY more.

    • Melissa Eggleton

I am 25 and decided to listen to the audiobooks while im working. I loved the movie and now that I have read (listened to) all of the books in this series, I want more movies! I agree that the marketing was done poorly and the books have so much more action than what is shown. I loved the whole cast and think that with a better screenwriter and better marketing the next movie could be so much better. Also the prequel series (The Infernal Devices) is also pretty awesome.

  • Raven Dorsey

Get the director that made Twilight.. all I know is I love the books and I would really want to see more movies there amazing… soo please please continue :)

  • Alex

TMI is a great book series. It could be made into an amazing set of movies. There have been a couple of huge misses with the City of Bones movie: 1) The miscasting of Jamie Campbell as Jace Wayland. Jace is a larger than life, witty, sarcastic, sexy, athletic, beautiful, heartthrob. Unfortunately, Jamie Campbell, who is a talented actor, cannot physically personify Jace. He cannot achieve the sexual chemistry & tension with Lily Collins, (Clary), that is an essential part of TMI story. Young movie fans need to have a (Jace) main character that they can drool over, and Jamie, having the skinny, strung out, over hairsprayed look that he has, will never foot the bill. 2) The screenplay was not well written. One of the major attractions of the TMI series is how well written the dialogue is; how intelligent, witty, sarcastic and naturally flowing it reads. The author of TMI,Cassandra Clare, should have had a much larger role in the writing/editing of the screen play, as well as deciding on its major plot lines. If TMI, City of Ashes, is produced, it should have a new Jace actor cast, and Cassandra Clare should play a pivotal role in all aspects of the screenplay.

  • kati

I love the movie.OK there are some parts changed but…What´s the matter? It´s an adaptation.I like the acting of Jamie Campbell Bower. For me he is the perfect Jace-one of the reasons to watch the movie. The main parts were well cast. Please don´t change. We are all agreed that we want City of Ashes.

  • ash

Absolutely love the books and the film really can’t wait to see the city of ashes

  • Kairi

Please hurry up and come out City of Ashes my inner fangirl cant stand to wait!!!

  • Charliebear Rogers

They better flim fast and realise to cinemas fast it is not the fans fault that they have taken a year to not even have a directar

  • TMI love

Everyone is saying ” jace” was portrayed by the wrong person but I loved the spark between James and lily they were awesome and I wanted to go see the movie at the theater but some people can’t afford the price of tickets and have to wait for redbox or for it to come out on DVD can’t wait for the next one saving up money now :D

  • Demi2

They need a better screenwriter. Coincidence that the screenwriter was the wife of the Sony VP with NO other screenplays under her belt? I think not! Let’s get someone with experience and talent to write it that doesn’t pander to the Twilight crowd and actually has their thumb on the pulse of the fans. Also, how about some real character development? The actors are good enough to carry out scenes longer than two minutes and have actual conversations with each other.

  • katinka

Hey Constantin! What´s up??We´re waiting for city of ashes. When will you start filming? We love Jamie as Jace!

  • Ryan Kadlec

The Mortal Instruments Reboot will be announced by Sony and to have a New Cast and a Director. it’ll pretend that the Lily Collins movie never happened.

  • Saara

I think the first movie was awful. It kinda ruined the whole book series for a while. Now I’m rereading it and slowly getting the nice and awesome feeling of the books and writing back. The books are very well written and I don’t think the movie was worth the books. So I really hope the next director can follow the books better and find better actors

  • Clare-Mary

I think the first movie was OK. I l didn’t hate it, and i actually REALLY liked the people they picked for the characters. They just didn’t follow the book well at all, not the actors fault! I just think that the second movie should follow the book better, and be produced better! They will be successful! its like twilight, the first movie wasn’t great quality, but then they took their time and thought out the last 4 and nailed it! They should keep the cast from the first movie, and hey, maybe a change of director will do some good!! Its a great series and I’d love to see in portrayed on screen continuing on with the original actors :)

  • Loretta Bruno

Loved the film, waiting for sequel. Please keep the same actors

    • Flavia G.

Hopin’ in 2015 they’ll make the movie with Jamie Campbell Bower and Lily Collins. (I think and i hope if they act together again they will fall in love again) and i hope clace will survive

  • Jim

Can’t wait for a sequel I read the whole series personally I think JJ Abrams
be a great choice would be a great choice, I worked with him on MI3 and Star Trek

  • paige

u need to keep the same people jace should be played by Jamie Campbell Bower he is so cute and amazing person for the part please keep him. Lily Collins, Jamie Bower, Kevin Zegers, Jemima West, and Robert Sheehan and all the other people should keep their parts and it would make the whole movie better and keep the movie more interesting. you should take my advise I am 12 I know what I am talking about

  • Cynthia

Ok, so the movie may not be as good as expected and they said they were trying to figure out what went wrong, but its the end of the year so technically its been a year and I think they should’ve found the mistake they made by now. I mean come on, I’ve already feel disappointed by the making and cancelation of Percy Jackson sequel, I think its time to make the next movie for The Mortal Instruments sequel. And just a suggestion, if they really want to change something, they should stick with what’s on the book.

P.s. the first movie was an okay one and I think they choose the right actors. Well even though maybe Jace is the hardest character to play but Jamie Campbell B. still played it really well, don’t you think?

  • Flavia

No ok i can’t wait. I think jamie campbell bower and lily collins must act in the sequel…now it’s 31.12.14 so when do they poduce City of Ashes (u think)?I can’t wait i love clace and their lovestoryyy

  • Flavia

    Lovin’ Jace

  • Guest

OK, so many the lead male roll could have done better, but PLEASE keep lily. Also keep to the books. have is supposed to be “adopted”, not tricked by Valintine because Hodge noticed the fact that Have and Clary were into each other majorly and told him.

  • Whitefeather9989

OK so mabey the male lead roll could have done better but PLEASE keep lily. Also keep to the books. Jace is supposed to be adopted, not tricked by Valentine because Hodge noticed the shared affection between Jace and Clary and busted them out to Valentine.

  • autumn

dont change the actors! my advise try to keep to the book more. I know you cant do it exacly like the book because then the movie would be a week long but come on step up if you put a part in the movie make it like it was in the book

  • uzza

I love the first film and cant wait for the second one to come out. You have to keep the same actors because the movie wont be the same and lily and Jamie are really good.

  • Victoria

    • VanessaT

I thought they weren’t going to make this sequel anymore?
Aren’t they turning it into a tv series?

  • Alex

I have all the books and I’ve seen the movie countless times I’m soooo anxious for their second movie and I’m totally digging the cast… LOVING Jamie and Lily!!!!

  • Debbi

They definitely need to stick to the books more….That was the problem. They didn’t develop the characters enough for you to really CARE about them. The problems come when they have a large book and try to whittle stuff down to 2 hours or less…..and sometimes you can’t or you sacrifice character development. The screen writers did an excellent job with the movie Twilight. I often just Hate going to a movie after I’ve read the book because I know they’re going to chop the heck out of it. Two examples…Beautiful Creatures and Stephen King books. I suggest making multiple movies to flesh out the characters or make a tv series like I’ve read they were Going to do. One tv series Much better than the books is Vampire Diaries.

  • Tracy M Sampson

I agree with Debbi, they need to stick with the books more. But I still like the movie and I’m waiting on the next one. I really wouldn’t delay too much longer to put it out. I think it’s too bad it’s not out by Halloween of this year. I feel like people like to watch more those type of movies during or close to Halloween . Also please don’t change the characters I like them, all of them, do not change who you had in the first movie,

    • As they are making a TV series now with new actors it looks as if the movie sequel has been cancelled :/

      • Megan McKnight

+Stuart Conover:or maybe just delayed again because no one really knows what they plan on doing with the left over tv series money plus the prequel project money.they might use that to make the sequel movie since the first movie was not strong enough on its own to get a sequel movie right away. They did not cancel the Infernal devices clockwork angel project. So they could just be delaying the sequel movie for a long amount of time until they get enough money to do a city of ashes movie for the mortal instruments movie franchise.

    • Tracy M Sampson

Also making it into a Tv series would be great and I would think you could spend time explains everything. I still say please do the movie as well, also would be great if you could use the same actors in the movie in the TV series as well, I especially like Lily, Clary, Jamie, I think they fit well with there characters. I just think Clary needs reder hair I thought in the book it wasn’t so dark. But that’s just minor lol. As for Jace I like the guy who plays him but I felt like in the book they mayed him out to be like really beautiful and this actor is go looking, don’t get me wrong but not like Chris Hemsworth or Charlie Hunnam. I think Charlie could probably pull off Jace, I think he could have pulled off that younger look, not that he’s real old is just that I believe in the book they are what late teens. Also I felt like jace should’ve been a little bit more powerful. But other than that I still think the guy did a good job don’t get me wrong.

      • Megan McKnight

+Tracy M Sampson:I think the tv series will help with the sequel movie and the creators of the first movie and tv series just do not want to admit that the tv series is aside project to help the movie get a sequel movie,I feel like the prequel project is going to help with the money towards a sequel movie too. They can not just leave it as a stand alone movie that would look stupid.

    • Megan McKnight

+Tracy M Samspon:I think the tv series and prequel series movie will be what saves the sequel movie those are probably side projects to help the first movie get the rest of the money it needs to have a sequel movie since the first movie was not strong enough on its own to get a sequel movie.
