When ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’ was born seven years ago out of a writer’s strike in Hollywood, the musical from Joss Whedon was an instant hit among fans. Not too long after the internet sensation took off, talk started about a sequel. However, everyone involved including people in front of and behind the camera got really busy. The Whedon brothers (Joss, Jed, and Zack) and Maurissa Tancharoen (Jed’s wife) are all busy on their own projects at the moment. While the oldest Whedon is shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe and ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’, the husband and wife team are executive producers on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’. As for the youngest sibling, he’s off writing an awesome comic book sequel to ‘Serenity’ for Dark Horse Comics titled ‘Serenity: Leaves On The Wind’. But despite the whole creative team behind Dr. Horrible being tied up, the whole cast and crew has stated over and over again that they’re all committed to continuing the beloved story. Now, we have an update on where we are on actually getting that sequel.

We last heard about this project about four months ago when the ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ showrunners opened up about where the talented family was on the follow up to their story starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day. Since it had been a little while, Entertainment Weekly followed up on the progress of the sequel and it was Jed Whedon once again to give us a little insight on where they were on things:

“We know we have spoken publicly about a sequel in the near distance and our passion to create it, and I promise we have not been insincere. Horrible is still one of our favorite creations by humans who were also us. We have many songs written and the plot outlined, but needless to say, we’ve been busy. Joss has had a hectic couple of years and is in the middle of the busiest year of his life, as is Zack and as are we. Also the actors have other things they’re acting in, I think. So the future is uncertain, our passion remains. DH2 will exist, in some format or another, at some point in the future. Unfortunately, the when is still unclear.”

It’s interesting that Whedon says “in some format or another”. It’s possible that a feature length film could be in the works, but what if it was something more out of the box? What if the Whedons are working on a radio play, a staged reading, or just the soundtrack that would be accompanied by a comic book? That family always finds ways to surprise their audience, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were thinking along those lines if they can’t pull together ‘Dr. Horrible 2’ in the same way that they did with the first one.

What do you think about Jed Whedon’s comments about the ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’ sequel? What other formats could you see the Whedon family releasing the project other than the traditional, previously utilized methods? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
