Joe and Anthony Russo are the two co-directors of the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier film. It’s the sequel to the first Captain America movie and due out in 2014. The interesting thing about it right now is what Joe Russo has to say about it.

In a recent interview with Screen Daily Joe mentioned that:

It’s going to be much greater than any Marvel movie to date.

That is an extremely bold statement with the movie still being a year away and Thor: The Dark World coming out in a few months, and most importantly The Avengers being already released to such fanfare. With the sum of The Avengers being so much greater than its parts, that alone has me thinking there is no way to top it. Mix in the fact that the first and third Iron Man movies were just so much fun.

I mean I get it. Captain America tends to lead The Avengers. He’s a great super hero in his own right that all other heroes look up to in one way or another. I also really enjoyed the first film. But even when you combine all of that together box office sales, it is clear to say audiences enjoy Iron Man and the team fully together than just a Captain America movie.

We’ve seen some set videos and early pictures from the film. While it looks fantastic and will be set in modern times compared to the epic World War 2 sequences from the first movie – will it really be able to top The Avengers?

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve loved every film the new Marvel Studios has put out to date. I also don’t want to write negative about the film itself as I’m sure I’m going to love this one just as much. My issue is that with Batroc the Leaper being one of the villains I can only set my expectations so high. Sure there will be an introduction to ‘The Winter Soldier’ (who I won’t spoil the identity of for non-comic readers or whoever has been ignoring the press.) That’ll be big but it wont be Thanos at the end of ‘The Avengers’ big. It just can’t be.

Seriously I know I’m going to enjoy the movie but that bold of a statement? It just doesn’t set well with me with having to compete against The Avengers or even the Iron Man trilogy.

So what do you all think? Will Joe Russo prove me wrong? Will Captain America become the movie icon that he’s been presented as in print? Sound off in the usual spot below.
