After rumors swirling for months, the speculation is over. Yes, Chris Pine has signed for a big role in a DC movie, but no, it’s not as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. The square-jawed action star, best known as the swaggering modern day Captain James T. Kirk in the ‘Star Trek’ films, will instead be the male lead in ‘Wonder Woman’ opposite Gal Gadot, who will play the title hero. Gadot will first appear in next summer’s ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ before spinning off into a solo movie. Pine will play Air Force Colonel Steve Trevor, the first man that Gadot’s Diana encounters when he accidentally crash lands on her mystery island home, located in the Bermuda Triangle. Traditionally, Trevor is Wonder Woman’s major love interest, a la Lois Lane in Superman lore.
Pine signed on for multiple films including expected sequels, but the exact number of movies is unknown. He is not expected to appear in ‘Batman V Superman’ which has already wrapped. Trevor has connections to the larger DC Universe as well, including ‘Suicide Squad’ but once again, it’s doubtful that he’ll pop up in that film, either, for the same reason.
Scott Eastwood, who appears in ‘Suicide Squad’ was speculated as possibly portraying Trevor, but now that is clearly debunked, making his part a question mark again.
Written by Jason Fuchs, the plot of the ‘Wonder Woman’ script is unknown, but is was earlier revealed that Warner Brothers wanted a character-driven story, versus a sprawling action epic.
Trevor’s comic book/television depictions have ranged from a capable military man of action to a bumbling gadabout that relies on Wonder Woman to rescue him from any pickles in which he might stumble into. Pine’s characters have typically balanced earnestness and swagger with human foibles, so he should do a great job regardless of the direction in which Warner Brothers takes his character. It’s not likely he’ll be a complete goof, though. That would get tiring really fast!
‘Wonder Woman’ will be directed by Patty Jenkins and produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Charles Roven and Richard Suckle of Atlas Entertainment. So far, Gadot and Pine are the only actors signed. The film will be released on June 23rd, 2017.
Pine is currently shooting ‘Star Trek Beyond’ with Justin Lun directing for a 2016 release to commemorate the franchise’s 50th anniversary and has reportedly already been offered a third sequel. He will next be seen in the Netflix original comedy series ‘Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp’.
Will Pine make a great dude in distress? What role should Steve Trevor play in ‘Wonder Woman’?
