Casting for Marc Webb’s follow up to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ has been under way as of late. Once it was confirmed that Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone would be returning in their respective roles, Shailene Woodley from the Oscar-winning dramedy ‘The Descendants’ was cast as iconic Spider-Man love interest Mary Jane Watson. Shortly after, rumors began about Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx playing the villainous Electro, but we’ve yet to get official confirmation. Now, it seems like another iconic Spidey player will be appearing in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ as a shortlist has been revealed for the role of Harry Osborn.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are three contenders currently being looked at to play Peter Parker’s best friend and eventual archenemy: Brady Corbet (‘Melancholia’), Dane DeHaan (‘Chronicle’), and Alden Ehrenreich (‘Beautiful Creatures’). Originally played by James Franco in the Sam Raimi trilogy, Webb first conceived Harry as an athletic jock, but it appears that Webb’s Harry will be darker and edgier, and older than Pete. The report describes Harry as “the college-aged kid who befriends Peter Parker but ultimately becomes Spider-Man’s deadliest enemy”. So does that mean that young master Parker is heading to college? I don’t think it’s out of the question with how smart he is. Or maybe he’s just taking a class or two at a college and meets Harry that way.

Based on looks alone, I’d say that Dane DeHaan would be the best fit for this “dark and edgy” Harry Osborn. Also, he’s coming off of ‘Chronicle’, which was met with critical acclaim, so it may benefit the production to have someone who’s got some heat right now from the found footage superhero flick, along with ‘Lawless’ and ‘Lincoln’.
