The film is not even in theaters yet but Warner Bros. has announced that the Blu-ray edition of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ will contain an extended version of the film.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise as the two-part film has already been increased to become a trilogy so what more could possibly be added? Apparently a lot more which seems to indicate that director Peter Jackson shot more footage for ‘An Unexpected Journey’ than originally thought.

While no specific date was revealed in the press release, the extended edition of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ is expected to be released sometime in the fourth quarter of next year probably around the time of the second installment of the trilogy, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,’ will be released.

The press release also announced that an “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” of ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy would also be released next year (this one during the third quarter of 2013) but no details were given as to what the “Ultimate Collection” would contain.

So start saving up money now as it looks like next year will be a banner year to buy Blu-ray sets!
