It looks as though Emma Roberts will definitely be back as the haughty Madison Montgomery in the upcoming eighth season of ‘American Horror Story’, which will be a crossover between Season One, ‘Murder House’ and Season Three, ‘Coven’, which happens to have been Roberts’ first appearance on the anthology series.

Roberts took to Instagram in full Madison mode, dressed in black, declaring “Surprise bitch, bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”

Madison was dead last we saw her.  First, Fiona (Jessica Lange) slit her throat, but Madison was brought back to life by Lily Rabe’s hippie witch Misty Day.  However, after that, she was strangled by “Frankenteen” Kyle Spencer (Evan Peters) and appeared to be gone for good.

In another exchange on Twitter, series creator Ryan Murphy declared that “All the witches are being asked back.”  He has since deleted the tweet, but someone managed to take a screen capture.

It’s hard to figure out which characters from Seasons One and Three will be bac, because most of them are dead.  But of course, the residents of ‘Murder House’ came back as ghosts, so they could easily appear.  And the witches have a nasty habit of coming back to life.  But as it ended, only Kyle, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson), Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) and Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) survived, but Queenie was later killed off in ‘Hotel’.  But Murphy’s tweet indicates that the creators have figured out a loophole that would allow them to revive fan favorites for the new episodes.

The big question is whether or not Jessica Lange will be back in any role.  Her character Constance actually survived ‘Murder House’, running off with her monstrous flesh hungry grandson.  Her character, Fiona Goode actually died of cancer in ‘Coven’ and was seen in the afterlife dwelling in a rustic cabin with Danny Huston’s Axeman.  She’d probably be relieved to escape that hell.

So far, no cast members have been confirmed, although prior to announcing that the eighth season would be the crossover event, Murphy had touted that Kathy Bates and Evan Peters would be the focal characters of the new season and that Peters’ character would be a comedic hair dresser with Joan Collins playing his grandmother.  Sarah Paulson is known to be returning and newer additions Billy Eichner, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd are also coming back.  But it’s not yet clear whether Murphy was planning an alternate storyline before getting the go-ahead for the crossover or if these new characters were created to be part of the crossover.

Like Roberts, Bates made her ‘AHS’ debut during ‘Coven’ as the evil slave owner Delphine LaLaurie, who was immortal until she killed Marie Laveau and chopped her into pieces.  At that point, Queenie stabbed and killed her.  Peters’ ‘Murder House’ character, Tate, was revealed to have been dead the entire time in that story.  In ‘Coven’, Kyle was one of the few survivors and he took over as butler for Miss Robichaux’s Academy.  That could potentially mean that Peters will play two characters, or even three if his hairdresser character is still part of this story.

Expect more details to emerge, as ‘American Horror Story’ should be going into production soon in order to be released this fall.
