Ever since DC has decided to make an origin film for ‘The Joker‘ with Joaquin Phoenix instead of Jared Leto, it has been clear that this would be an “Elseworlds” style movie. For those unfamiliar with the concept, it is a non-main canon story set in the DC world to give us a different perspective of characters or events. While it isn’t clear what direction Todd Phillips will be taking the film so far, we have found out character bios for some of the main characters who likely won’t be laughing throughout the movie.
As production is set to begin this September, I suspect we’ll be hearing more shortly.
As to who will be involved in the film:
Penny: Supporting Female (60-74) Caucasian. Lower class, very attractive in her younger days, still feels that way about herself. But recently her health has started failing, and she’s nearly bedridden in her Lower East Side apartment which she shares with her grown son who just moved back home. She’s obsessed with her former employer and can’t believe that this is what her life has come to, that she has ended up here, like this…
The age could easily put Penny as the mother of the most iconic supervillain of all time. Perhaps her death or trying to prevent it will be what helps turn Phoenix’s character into the Clown Prince of Crime.
Sophie Dumond: Supporting female (27-34) to play African American or to play Latina. Not beautiful, has a hardness to her, a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet; worn out by the grind of the city. She understands how the system is stacked against her and the people in her community, how unjust it all is for them. She’s just trying to catch a break.
Could Sophie be a love interest or partner in crime to The Joker? She seems to have the right kind of desperation to be willing to go to extremes to get ahead.
Murray Franklin: Male (65-75) Caucasian
No details as to what this role will be but it sounds like Robert DeNiro might be in talks for whatever this role would end up being.
Randall: Supporting Male (40-59)Caucasian. Thinks he’s the wisest and most knowledgeable person in any room he’s in; tries to present himself as a mentor to everybody, but is really just looking out for himself, burly.
Sounds like he could be the perfect fit or someone who is working with criminals.
Gary: Supporting Male (30-49) any ethnicity to play a dwarf; Randall’s best friend, he’s good-natured and a buddy to his colleagues at work, one of the only decent people in the whole movie.
If he’s a decent person, you have to wonder if Randall might not actually be working with villains after all.
Hoyt Vaughn: Supporting Male (50-69) any ethnicity the old-school manager of hotel staff. He’s seen it all, and finds it difficult to give a shit about much of anything anymore
With a hotel being one of the primary sets for the film and the manager being involved, you almost have to wonder if we’ll see The Joker staying or working here before he gets into a life of crime.
Detective Garrity: Supporting Male (50-59) any ethnicity. Police Detective in a city on the brink; a by-the-book cop, worn down by all his years on the force. He doesn’t care about or take into consideration any of the societal or political ramifications of his cases.
With so much crime going on it should come as no surprise that we’d be getting some police involved. It sounds like he is just doing his job until getting a pension at this point and might be getting into some trouble if “ramifications” are on the horizon for a case he’s working.
Detective Burke: Supporting Male (30-39) any ethnicity. A Police Detective and Garrity’s partner; he’s an asshole, who gets off by being in a position of authority. Being a cop is how he defines himself.
This one almost sounds like it could be a take on Harvey Bullock though the power trip doesn’t mention any layers of corruption which are often associated with the character.
Do any of the additions to the cast of ‘The Joker’ sound like interesting secondary characters? Who would you like to see play any of these parts? Share your thoughts below!
